I actually didn't get any pics from the pie stop :( maybe someone else did.

Edit- SEMPER GUMBY

Went for another "Recovery Ride," my third time on the bike since the doc put the knee back together.

Figure it would be a short one, just to test the GPS mounting I had installed and blow out some frustrations.

I meandered around Fayette, Lee and Bastrop counties, had to stop for fuel once, and by the time I got back home the Tiger and I had racked up over a hundred miles. Which actually is one of my normal "short" rides, but I was happy to have managed it so well with a knee that is on the mend.

Picked up a number of my faves in the area, Baron Rd, Owl Creek Rd, the road by Camp Tejas and out to see the dust in the air around the "Cotton Bowl" circle track where they were racing stock cars Saturday night.

Overall a great evening mix of daylight and night riding. Saw several deer, a raccoon, rabbits and an opossum on the trip. Temps went from perfect to a little chilly by the time I was headed home. It's times like this when I realize just how well the Motoport mesh flows air.

Looking forward to the next ride on the Crutch Rocket.

That poor bike's gonna get a nickname that it didn't have nothing to do with!!! 'cept the healing up and feeling better part, that is.....:sun:

Saturday May 4th.
Camping with some friends near Marquez, rode 100 miles mostly on gravel, and found another "lignite mining tunnel" near Buffalo/Jewett. Ate at Cactus Jacks in Buffalo, had a wonderful sammich with smoked beef and coleslaw called the macdaddy! At the end of the day I managed to hack my buddy Jerry off, that's not easy to do!! :lol2: We rode a nice country road into Marquez for fuel. Stopped on a private ranch in front of a old yard gate, and the yard has grown up so much you couldn't walk through it!
Pic 1) tunnel
Pic2) Hacked off Jerry near the yard gate!

Early Saturday I changed the 21" front wheel for a 17" front and re-adjusted the sidecar a bit.....boy it handles much better!

I know where that place is. Passed by it twice, just yesterday. Didn't know that area was called Cecile though. Where did you go after leaving there? If that's the extent of the ride, you didn't go far.

Enjoyed a trek back from Belton, rode Bell County Three Forks to Dice Grove to Sullivan to Reeds cemetery to Sypert Branch road.....then Milam CR 406 to 405 to 1915 to 407 through San Gabriel and home.....
pic1- Miriam Ferguson Birthplace, first Governor of any State! near the Wallace cemetery.
Pic2- Beautiful cedar elm near Wallace cemetery, amber waves of grain in the background, the smell of summer coming near this simple reminder of life and death.
Pic3- The old steel bridge over Little River on Milam CR405 is GONE.. here is what is left (bulkheads) I am saddened by this, rested in the shade and snacked on briar tips, crackers and drank water thinking about all this "progress". And so it goes.....
Pic4- Friendship Methodist Church, our sister church, I have broken bread with these fine people. Their cemetery is raked clean!!
:sun:
Y'all may think ill of me, but I got an old 60 penny bridge nail to wiggle out of one of the bulkheads to boot....jus' 'cause........

Cecile? Depends on which map you check. :trust:. Seems there are some forgotten names along the rail lines. Didn't go far, just excercised the street bike along a ~70 mile loop around Frierson, including a couple of bumpy oil-top roads.

Regular workday Friday, rode about 110 to Austin and back making calls......one unique thing I wanted to share. I found a cool concrete drainage ditch on the east side of the warehouse complex at the end of Wall Street that houses 1-800-packrat and behind Allied Plastics....this critter is nice and wide, with a "Y" about halfway down and even a few shade trees to boot! It can be accessed off of Ferguson Rd. as well, just up from the big auction place. I had fun riding up and down the sides and practicing off-balance turns! Felt like I was skateboarding..;-)

More commuting pics from Austin and surrounding:
Pic1- emerging cornflowers and long train near Beyersville
pic2- south east Austin, parked in a KIPP school lot...how often does one see an intact Edsel?? Bad pics, but this one had three on the tree I think, and a nice metalflake silver roof....no rust!
Pic3- Edsel front, could also be titled "double ugly" with my KLR beside....;-)
made about 600 miles this week....:sun:

Thursday May 24th.
Found freecampsites.net a few weeks ago. Been meaning to go check out these free sites. Since I didn't have the money to make the 49er rally in Mariposa County I decided I'd spend two seperate nights at two seperate camp sites that I found on the freecampsites.net site.

1st one was about 50 miles away down a fireroad. This worked well since I got off kinda late and I setup camp in the fading light. No biggie though since the Moon was full and freakin HUGE. It was like working via a giant glowstick.

[On I-8 heading east towards Alpine, Ca.

The first camp site as seen in the light of day. I didn't hear or see another human being until I was back on the pavement headed towards Julian, Ca.

I went back to the barracks after breakfast at Julian, Ca then regrouped with my maps and the freecampsites.net website to plan my next route.

Friday 25 May,
After going over the maps and punching my route into basecamp I took off from the Barracks again headed north East towards Santa Rosa Mountain and the "Yellow post" campsites at the top. Again free. The only thing I paid for this weekend was gas and what little food I ate.

The roads going up were roads I had been on before. Great scenery and enough twists to keep you from zoning out and going into road hypnosis mode.

I would have never thought to go down this road for camping. I'm really glad I found the website that had the information on it. The fireroad/Forest Service road was mostly well maintained. Until you get towards the top where I guess the road grader can't get to then you get into stuff that you have to pay attention to on an adventure bike. My skidplate earned it's keep this weekend.

Got too slow on an uphill sandy whoop section in the turn of a switch back and the bike decided there would be a good place to take a nap. Of course it laid over DOWN HILL so it was a ***** to pick back up but proper technique saved the day.

The top was awesome. Just a hair over 8000 feet with great view from both sides. I was going to camp by the giant fireplace but there was busted glass and for some reason HUGE NAILS everywhere. How I didn't get a flat riding up there is beyond me. I decided to setup camp at the actual designated campsite about 10 feet lower than the fireplace.

Here's the site. I had another with me in it but hte contrast was all messed up.

Full moon rising over the adjacent mountain top. It was higher than the one I was on but was gated off I assume because of all the radio and cell towers on top of it.

The wind was blowing pretty good all night. Flag stayed planted though. That's the moon shining though it.

Right before sunset I ran back to the west side of the hill and climbed a rock and made a toast to the those men and women before us who had fallen and made a weekend such as this possible for all of us.

Woke up around 630 and made breakfast and got camp packed up. Had to be back in San Diego by 11 for a coffee date at the local starbucks. It was fitting going to a Starbucks on an adventure bike since that's what they were really built for :lol2:

Found this odd tree not far from the campsite on the way back down. I saw it on the way up but didn't think to stop and take a picture then.

I decided to call my camping weekend over after that since I really didn't want to go back out in Memorial Day camping and recreation traffic.

Great ride downs, glad to see you're enjoying yourself out there. We're finally getting rain since you left. Dust is a distant memory right now!

Riding the Three Sisters in the fog and rain right now. For the first time in 2 to 3 years, the rivers are flowing, the flowers blooming and the various grasses are lush and vibrant green.

Git r' done.

Dube/Schwantz Ranch Road is open, un-gated, and very washed out. Perfect!l

Thanks for the heads up J. I have never before ridden Schwantz Ranch Road without encountering a locked gate midway through.

I took that section at about 35mph. Some of the washouts are 12-14" deep.
