We rode yesterday late afternoon, two up along with two other couples. went up highway 377 into Oklahoma to Madill for dinner at a place called Hobo-Joes. Great ride up and then the wind picked up for out ride home. Only a short part with the cross wind and then into it the rest of the way. Felt good to back on the bike finally.

New bike and we only get the 20 foot view ???

I got Daniel and Sarah out for a nice 150 mile ride today. It was quite windy, but otherwise a nice day. Spring has definitely sprung! It was 78 F today!! We headed out after church in the direction of Iola. We like to get lunch at Mallet Brothers BBQ if we can get there by 2:00pm, which is when they close. It is usually a close call, but we got there with 2 minutes to spare and they happily let us in. Last week we missed it by 2 minutes and had to head over to College Station to Rudy's for a late lunch. Daniel did the ride out to Iola, which was all pavement on FM 1696 and very windy! After lunch, Sarah took over the XT250 and we headed out of town on CR 108 and then South on CR 103 to CR 162 where we cut back over to FM 244. Along the way, we stopped to get a shot of Sarah,

Daniel chilling and waiting patiently...

Once on 244, we headed South past Yankee's Tavern. There are some nice easy sweepers along this stretch and Sarah needs the practice picking lines through the corners. She does a very good job of picking her tip in point, then holding a smooth line through the corner. She thinks she's weaving all over the place, but in reality, she is not! At Hwy 30, we jumped slightly West to CR 192 and CR 190 where we headed South down through the old lignite mines that used to feed the nearby power station at Gibbons Creek Reservoir for years. Now it is prime real estate with a lot of lakes. We dropped out on FM 3090 and continued South to 149 and turned toward Navasota. A few miles down the road we picked up CR 447 and ran East to Anderson for gas, drinks, and an ice cream.

After a nice break, we headed back West out of Anderson on Hwy 90 and picked up CR 405. Daniel is back on the XT now and he LOVES the dirt roads!

Sarah waiting on me so we can go catch Daniel

We caught him and headed West on CR 405, which eventually loops down to the South and hit CR 406. Here we cut back East on CR 406. There is a nasty hidden stop sign on this road, immediately around a corner and behind some trees where it meets CR 215 as a Tee intersection. Blow this unexpected stop and you will find yourself going through a barbed wire fence. I have a permanent warning marker set on my GPS for this intersection, well... because :wary: We continued East on CR 215 and soon found a LOT of blooming Red Bud trees in one spot. We'd been seeing them all day, but these were nice. So we stopped for a few pics and another video.

Daniel coming back after a successful U-Turn
image_50445313.JPG

We needed to be back up to Huntsville by 6:00pm for church, so we ran CR 215 across FM 1774 to CR 212 and hit FM 1486. We turned North and ran up to Richards for a quick pit stop and rider change. Sarah wanted some more seat time. From there we ran FM 149 East until just past Drifter's to Bays Chapel Road. This is the spot where Mark Eggars had his fatal accident one morning on the way to a TWT breakfast meet in Montgomery back in November of 2003. He was a great guy. We never knew what happened. I think of him every single time I ride by here, even 20 years later. Turning north, we ran a short distance up to NF-209 and cut through the Sam Houston NF to Taliaferro Rd., where 209 turns to gravel and continues cutting Northeast to FM 1791. I got Sarah to let me get ahead of her so I could set up for another video.

Once we hit FM 1971, we had to make time and get North. We crossed Hwy 30 and continued around FM 1791 toward I-45. Just past the Able Ammo & Gun store, she was coming out of a long gentle sweeper at about 65mph, barely leaning. As she straightened up, the bike started a pretty bad head shake. It scared the poop out of me watching it, but I was able to tell her to relax her grip and ease off the gas. Fortunately, it died out pretty quickly after that. It scared her pretty good too. So I will be doing some investigating into that... Daniel has mentioned that the bike starts feeling a little squirrely around 65mph, even in a straight line. We made it to the church on time. Afterward, Sarah wanted to head back into town to go to her gym for a workout, so Rachel got to ride home with me. Sarah had called her earlier and told her to bring the necessary gear. This was only her second time ever to ride with me on the GS, the first time being maybe 5-6 years ago. She's not really expressed much interest since that first ride, but I think now that Sarah and Daniel are riding, that is making her rethink her interest... :trust:

We had a great time. Both of them are doing very well learning the basic skills. I've really been working with them on it. Having the ability to talk to them while riding is incredibly invaluable!! Even in the middle of a corner, if they start to drift wide, I can just calmly say, "Eyes up! Look through the corner!" and they will immediately correct and continue without issue. It is also nice to be able to give them some heads up about particular corners or intersections, like that hidden stop sign. But, I also like to get quite for a bit and let them practice reading the roads for themselves to judge traction, sharpness of a corner, direction of a turn over a hill, etc,... It is quite fun!

I got out last week and had lunch in Alto with Bill Woodall (pub610). Sorry to say no pictures. I did stop at TWT world headquarters on my way home to “contribute to the cause”. Had a nice conversation with the Clan Friday. Got a shock as Daniel walked up. This “little” kid ain’t little no more. 😳
