Your report is great. I hope to do something similar this summer or fall.

Question? How do you take your selfies while on the bike?

Or maybe I carry this baby tripod and use an iPhone in video mode. Plan A would be cooler.

Slept pretty good. First time I felt comfortable putting in ear plugs and conking out. Big mile day instore for today, here comes the pavement. Dadgumit. Camp broke.

1680375585488.jpeg

Had to switch a gear in my brain. Find adventure and good fortune in this part. Fair weather. I’m feeling good. I have a healthy steed with a 100 ponies. And time. Let it come to me.

1680375692503.jpeg

There is worse pavement to pound I suppose, just tried to relax, daydream about life out here. But I was daydreaming about home as well. Day 5, about right. Plus my ears hurt from taking my helmet off 200 times. Cuticles are trashed from gloves coming on and off. Body is sore from the repeated tasks. Man, but it’s good for you!

1680375726820.jpeg

I only stopped a couple times in this 100+ mile stretch.

Hello Alpine. Goodbye Alpine.

Not something you see too often, a dead bull elk in-between Marathon and Sanderson. Looks pretty fresh, last night? Bet that was scary. Somebody already harvested the antlers.

Sanderson Texas—The Town Too Mean For Bean. I have passed through here many times and just kept going to get to Big Bend, including a couple days ago. I decided to poke around a little today.

1680379349167.png

Sanderson came to be with the construction of the railroad in 1881. Charlie Wilson was the first to settle in the area. He established a saloon nearby called the Cottage Bar Saloon. Where’s that place when you need it. Sorry Charlie.

1680379256955.png

He had a local competitor, Roy Bean, as in the future “Judge”. However when Bean opened another saloon in town, Wilson spiked his whiskey with “coal oil” and Bean moved east to Vinegarroon, close to where the Pecos high bridge is now. Sanderson peaked at 3000 in the 1950s. But in 1965 a wall of water came down the canyon and hit the town pretty hard, 27 people died. As a result 11 flood control dams were built. The town slowly recovered but the population did not. Present day, 27 people live here, or maybe I made that last part up.

1680379273930.png

1680379284798.png

1680379299264.png

I looked for a local eatery. Not many options and the only thing open was this “coffee house”.

1680379380120.jpeg

Not normally my scene but I was feeling drawn to it.

1680379402271.jpeg

Cool, I can get a hot sandwich and a drink that was other than coffee. Cool, and there is live music. Cool, they are good and singing songs I know. Mamas and The Papas, Van Halen…..

1680379618924.jpeg

And then in a corner this dude was whipping out a painting. From behind him over his shoulder I said, ‘Lori Darlin’. Cool dude. If you have $750 you can own that painting.

1680379551961.png

I ate and updated the ride report from yesterday. And shed a layer. Onward, after a court house visit.

1680379652797.jpeg

Not impressed, so I took a pic of this old place.

1680379670053.jpeg

From here….decided to do something different. Not wanting to do the same exact roads I did on the way out here, went for some new to me pavement going north. I’ve always noticed the crazy big dam west of town on 90, now we know why it came to be. Then today going north, these 3 within about 8 miles of town. If that town floods now, we got bigger issues.

1680379853301.jpeg

1680379870473.jpeg

1680379885909.jpeg

I really enjoyed this route. Nothing crazy awesome but new territory for me and it threw in some pretty stuff here and there.

1680379945276.jpeg

1680379986667.jpeg

Shed another layer. Enjoyed the smells. And what a lonely stretch of road. Saw nobody.

1680379965130.jpeg

I’ve stopped at Ft Lancaster before, not much there present day but worth the stop/read if you are biking out this way. You can see it down below from this point.

1680380008916.jpeg

At the top of that climb is a really nice picnic area. I took a good long break here.

1680380085667.jpeg

1680380111422.jpeg

I’m doing good on time and this is really peaceful and the view is good. And I had coverage, answered y’all’s questions and moved out. After I shed my last layer. Getting warm.

1680380153359.jpeg

Rolled into Ozona and found some shade to knock out this part of the ride report. Used the water hose from this church to douse my clothes and leaned against a tree on the court house square. Might as well be cold before I’m hot?

1680380248081.jpeg

Smell ya later, gotta keep moving.

Ok, where were we. Boring east travel? Kind of. But I was following my own advice and trying to find the adventure in it. I’ve stopped at this guys place before, and had conversations with him. I won’t tell you which truck. Don’t trust you. But it’s still there 2 years later.

1680397611771.jpeg

Moving on down the road. Trying to skirt the devil, trying to stay off interstate. I got on it for 4 miles, threw up in mouth and got back off as soon as I could, to ride stuff like this

1680399303331.jpeg

Keep reminding myself to keep my eye on the prize. Be patient, it’s coming. And there is still some enjoyment to be had on some of these lonelier roads. Case in point, pulled up to this river crossing on a back road and an old timer pulled up to chat in a jeep. His grandfather bought the land in 1906. He said this was the original I-10 route back in the day. Pretty cool. Really sweet dude.

1680401192128.jpeg

1680399391579.jpeg

Couple more paved crossings. Almost biffed one of them. Wouldn’t that be classic, cover the ground I’ve covered without incident and then drop the bike on slick slime concrete. My rear tire is not what I would call meaty at this point. Does that help with pavement, like a racing slick?

1680399681706.jpeg

1680402721106.jpeg

Thankfully got on some dirt, arg, finally. Gimme gimme!

1680399738091.jpeg

And some more nice water crossings. I was fighting getting wet, but held off.

Ok, had a tip on this meat market in Roosevelt. Snag you some if in the area. And if you are someone’s mysterious uncle, he does make the drive to Kerrville twice a month and will meet you in the Walmart parking lot. Just saying. We chit chatted and I told him which cut I wanted and how thick. Then had to cut him off, he was doing that gust to fifty thing. Nice fella, I just have an appointment with destiny.

1680399982325.jpeg

Little more ride to ride. I really like this pic! I can only look at this on my phone but it looks cool to me, and it certainly was in person.

1680400073479.jpeg

Snagged some supplies and made my way for the prize.

1680400134230.jpeg

Ahhh, we there. I had the privilege to camp at a buddy’s place on the Llano River. He rides bikes as well, but is too hard core for me. I once saw him ride a Super Tenere till he blew the muffler right off! Estupenduro reined us in and put us directly on the water. Yes, he has a name now. It was his idea. You don’t argue when he drags your carcass where we’ve been the past few days.

1680400358955.jpeg

I was bummed my friend couldn’t be here. I made do, and my hair smelled good. Last shower was Sauceda Bunk house. Hmmm.

1680400548855.jpeg

1680400431858.jpeg

With goose bumps, got my camp situated. Not too shabby.

1680400883535.jpeg

Was today an adventure? You be the judge. But despite the big pavement, I still managed to suck the marrow out the day and I’m feeling good. I’m writing this entry listening to turkeys in the distance, JBL speaker playing Jerry Reed…A Thing Called Love…and I’m chowing down on this steak. Pretty good day I’d say.

Of all the trails in life, there are some that matter most. It is the trail of a true human being. Kicking Bird

Alright Steve...this last pic is...disturbing. You know how you're always hitting me with that, "pics or it didn't happen" comment? Maybe this is one that we could have passed on. :lol2:
Ahhh, it was needed. It seems crazy that your hair can hurt. And you got the good side of me. Night night.

1680404405423.jpeg

Friend with a Super Tenere? I wonder if instead of hanging out with you, if he was at my house today. Clearly he's smart in who he chooses to hang out with.

Good grief, Steve...your buddy on the Llano is too hardcore of a rider for you? I wasn't aware that you were friends with David Knight! :lol2:

Woke up and looked out my tent, herd of turkeys(flock, gaggle?), with a tom giving his full display, till he saw me trying for my camera and ran off too quick, dang turkey. Oh well, broke camp and started my last leg home.

1680472012282.jpeg

Going to be lots of pavement today. But again, temps are good and I’m going to find the upside.

1680472032969.jpeg

1680472055330.jpeg

1680472071726.jpeg

My body feels like it has been asked to ride hundreds of miles for dang near a week straight. Oh, there is a good reason for that I guess. You can do it you ol carcass you. Just look around and get inspired. Ok, ok. I suppose. Dirt can lift the spirits!

1680472095657.jpeg

And water crossings.

1680472108264.jpeg

I grabbed some familiar favs and started making my way southeast. Deer moving around like crazy. Cool morning smells.

1680472127624.jpeg

I’m on the home stretch and inside my normal stomping grounds at this point. Flopping back and forth from paved to dirt. Ran over a chicken snake, at least I think it was a chicken snake. Forgot to mention I ran over a rattle snake on Chispa. It was in that section giving me the willies. I thought it was a stick or pipe as it was as wide as the track. When I saw what it was, hammered down the trottle. Pretty sure he got estupenduro’d. I wanted to go back and see, maybe get a pic, but my spidy senses said keep moving gringo.

1680472150445.jpeg

I’ve stopped here a couple times before, but couldn’t help but stop again.

1680472169568.jpeg

I hadn’t noticed the monument tucked up in the brush.

1680472187975.jpeg

And I looked closer at the wall/chute leading downhill to the mill. And I had my helmet off, could hear water doing something cool past the rock fence.

1680472257228.jpeg

1680472269606.jpeg

I might have snuck a look at this waterfall setup a little closer. If I owned this, it would be in much better shape and would be enjoyed more. Pretty special spot. Jealous of the possibilities.

1680472296041.jpeg

Moving on. Pavement. Flowers. Water. More dirt. You know, generally cool stuff to ride through.

I had to get on 281 for like 2 miles. Dang at the traffic. And aggressiveness. Have I been in the bush too long? Stopped here and had a guac burger, pretty dang good.

1680472585670.jpeg

Got the heck out of JC and back on back roads. Thank goodness, no people to speak of.

1680472603556.jpeg

Had to jump on 290 for about 2 miles. Again, crazy traffic. Where is everyone going today? I quickly got off on a back road.

1680472646567.jpeg

1680472721931.jpeg

Where you get to see stuff like this.

1680472678275.jpeg

1680472705028.jpeg

And what about this? I will catch you.

1680472755844.jpeg

1680472767815.jpeg

He pulled over to let me pass, not so fast, I want to take a pic.

1680472793319.jpeg

And then we had a nice conversation. Retired fire fighter that lives in Wimberley and was just cruising his normal roads. He had a XR650L at one time, so he was asking me about as many questions as I was asking him. You don’t have those conversations on highways!

1680472813063.jpeg

Moving on down the road, the backroads!

1680472841977.jpeg

Made my way through Wimberzoo, then caught my last good backroad, avoiding the crazies on 4 wheels.

Not as many flowers in my neck of the woods, but it sure is green. The most flowers from today were northwest of JC, if you are looking for the good stuff.

1680473019868.jpeg

Alright, touchdown. Any significant things to share as I reflect on this ride? Nope, I got nothing. Just a pile of dirty clothes and a mostly wore out back tire. And a mostly wore out Stevo. Smell ya later.

I just rode Fulton Ranch Rd yesterday, after some fine dining at Shamrock Tacos. Nice report, Steve! Glad you're home safely.

I have enjoyed all of your trip reports and I think this one is the best! My favorite parts of Texas, great photographs, information on the places you went, humor and a great looking lady photo assistant! :-D

Thanks! It is a special part of Texas out there for sure. So much history and I haven’t even scratched the surface. Future rides, higher learning?
