So I posted up about wanting to do a group ride this weekend. I had six takers initially, but StarSapphire and JustJ dropped from not feeling well (but they still made it to breakfast ). That left five. Squeaky (Rebecca), flyerjmr33 (Jim), ceddec (Dennis) and his wife, Jeanne, and me.
We met for breakfast at Avalon Diner in Stafford...
Then headed up to Fulshear to meet up with Dennis and his wife, Jeanne. It was a bit windy, and when we got there, Dennis and Jeanne said it was a bit too windy for their comfort level, and apologized for having to bail out. No apologies necessary, I'd rather someone do that than push themselves beyond their comfort level and have an accident. Before we said our good-byes, we paused for a photo of the group...
While we were chatting this dude in tights comes up and starts talking to us - turned out to be none other than Poser!
He was on a ride of another kind - training for the MS 150.
With Dennis and Jeanne out, that left Jim, Rebecca, and me for the rest of the day. We made our way north and west through Brookshire, Bellville, and Chappell Hill to Scenic Farm Road 390. We stopped for a picture in Independence at the Old Baylor College...
We continued west on FM 390 to Burton, then southwest to Round Top for lunch. The wind was brisk, but not too bad as yet, and we enjoyed the ride through some beautiful Texas country side. In Round Top, we ate lunch at Royer's Round Top Cafe...
The proprietor...
The "Bud" burger...
...followed by peach pie...
We enjoyed a nice conversation over lunch and got to know Jim better. He's a former Air Force pilot and veteran of the Korean War. Boy, does he have some great stories to tell!
After lunch, we walked around the town square and looked around. The Blue Knights were having a meet-up in Round Top today, and there appeared to be upwards of 150 bikes around the town square...
Rebecca and Jim taking in all the bikes around the town square...
This is like no other taxi I've ever seen...
From Round Top, we headed down to Fayetteville, where we picked up FM 1291 (a really fun, twisty road), and then rode through New Ulm and Sealy. By this time, the wind was getting pretty bad, and while tolerable, we were getting pretty beat up. Just past Sealy, we stopped and explored the historic site of Old San Felipe...
Rebecca...
We hit a few more fun roads as we made our way back toward Sugar Land. Jim split off and headed home, and Rebecca and I made our way over to our Monday night meet-n-greet spot, Live Oak Grill. We were joined for dinner by Jamie and family, StarSapphirea and JustJ, and Mollie (BMWbabe). After a nice dinner and great conversation with fellow TWTers, I made it home tired and happy.
Jamie and Ashley...
One parting thought...
Our group today consisted of a young single woman, a married middle-aged man with two kids, and a retired gentleman who fought in a war more than 50 years ago. I can't think of another activity where such a diverse group can have so much fun together. I love motorcycling.
