Ride Hard, Take Unnecessary Chances, Safety Third - MexTrek 2009

You know... reading these threads and others, having a Mexican friend or two and talking to Mexicans on the job.... it might just be my idealistic, naive, sappy view of the world... but I kind of feel like contemporary Mexicans are like Americans from 100 - 150 years ago. And not in a bad way. They seem family oriented, resourceful, hard working, and friendly. At least I'd like to _think_ Americans were that way once... ;-)
I'll roger that.
Our cultures are blending before our very eyes.
Most men you meet in Mexico have all worked in the States at one time or another. What kind of influence must that have? On the other hand, when I was in HS, speaking a little Spanish was a rare thing. Nowdays...... Why... they're speaking it at Home Depot.

Aside from the spills and sickness, looks like a great time was had by all. Thanks for the ride reports and great pics! Scott, give me a shout when you get a chance.

Nice pictures and ride reports from everyone. Another very successful trip thanks to Richard. See ya'll next year.
THE END.

One of my favorite all time photos was a similar one taken of this guy last year. It looks like the past year has been good to him as he appears noticeably healthier.

Roadside memorials for loved ones are seemingly everywhere in Mexico. This one was a bit unique in that it was in a window set into the cliff.

Restaraunt Ramirez in General Zaragoza. The Carne Guisada with handmade tortillas was excellent. As we were finishing the meal, a local farmer came in and gave us apples from his orchard for dessert.

Helping a fellow rider in Galeana - not much of a problem that electrical tape and an old inner tube couldn't fix. He was heading back to Saltillo, on the highway, at night, in the rain - I hope I actually did him a favor by fixing the bike.

This fellow was absolutely determined to wash my bike - he wouldn't take no for an answer. I know the gritty rags he was using and the lack of available water was doing it more harm than good, but I hadn't the heart to stop him.

Good pics Jerry! Anyone heard from Ed? I don't know what his handle is on here.

Thanks Jerry. I always love your shots.
And...... thanks for backing me up on the return ride to McAllen.
I'm a little unfamiliar with the restaurant in Zaragoza. Any hints?

Great shots, Jerry. The one of the dog is my favorite too.

Video of Pete, Milton and Waylon at the first river crossing of the UNKNOWN. To be truthful if we had known what was ahead it may still be UNKNOWN.

Hi Milton - I thought about you while we were having lunch there. In addition to excellent food, "Ramirez Restaurant and Huispedaje" has rooms available. Furthermore there was an adjacent courtyard and parking area to secure a truck or two and motorcycles during a stay. The restaurant was clean, owner operated, and seemed very friendly towards us "puro gringos" who happened to wander in. I wouldn't hesitate to stay there, and would recommend it as a base for "Trailblazers" wanting to further explore the area.

Here's a detailed map of the area - as recounted by my photographic memory:

Route: Dirt: Galeana – Rayones – Cartagena – La Boquilla – Casillas – Granja de las Comas – Jame; Paved: – Carretera 10 – La Biznaga - Los Llanos – Carretera 57 – San Roberto - Galeana. 186 miles total.

Albert looking for his bike.
No, I remember now. We took a refreshing dip at the river.
As my daughters say: You are 16 again.

Class 1.05 water crossings.
It posed such danger that one of our fellow riders wisely took a longer but safer alternate route.
This definitely Is Not a road for Wayland.

The extreme difficulty of this Class 1.03 almost goat trail
with step and rutted surface kept the cameraman unable to focus the riders.
I think Don and Primo were better off this road.

Camaraderie, joy, new friends, doing what you like, being 16 again.

Paging Jeff M. to the white courtesy phone. Jeff M. to the white courtesy phone please....

Yep I made it back fine. I ended up on the wrong freeway in Reynosa after a large double rock truck cut in front of me. Rafael gave me some good directions and I headed east to the next border crossing in Pharr.

Sorry for the late courtesy callback, but I didn't have a TWT account.

Thanks for putting on a great event Richard. I'll be coming next year for sure. Hopefully with a more dirt oriented bike!

Below is an e-mail that I recieved from Don's wife. Sounds like he may have been more banged up than he let on. Keep him in your thoughts and prayers. :

Hi..........Donald is having a pretty tough time.....he is in quite a bit of pain, taking vicodin as often as he can and sleeping fitfully. He's seen several doctors since we got him home. A lung dr. who told us that he has blood pooling in the bottom of that left lung, but he thinks that since he is not running any temp. that this will resolve on it's own. The orthopedic dr. is going to see him in 2 weeks and do another x-ray on his collar bone. He said that he may have to have some surgery on that.
It is just going to take some time for everything to heal and knit back together...... we are just praying that it will be sooner rather than later.
I want you all to know that we (our Sons, Donald & I) can never thank you enough for the care that you gave to Donald after his "unfortunate getoff". I didn't have the opportunity to tell you this before you left McAllen and we are just now getting to our e-mails.........so thank you for every kindness shown to us. Please give our thanks to all the guys who were on this adventure........May God bless you and yours in all your days ahead.

Very very good stuff! Sorry I missed this one. Thanks for the trip report. And very nice videos.

Actually Milton was aware of his resemblence to the slightly daft doc many moons ago, even tried to work up a Halloween costume once, but it didn't quite work for me. Ahh well, I never was into Halloween costumes much. But with hair like ours, who needs costumes.

Sheesh.... I never get credit for anything.... :argh:

:lol2: OK, I really didn't know his name was Doc Brown. I just knew him as Christopher Lloyd, the guy in Back From the Future. And you did nail it Scott, before you even met me.
