Hello TWT!

My name is Oscar, and I've recently discovered the fun that can be had on motorized two wheels. College student at Lone Star Community college and currently majoring in Accounting. My journey to biking began around the beginning of October. Thought about getting a dirt bike for riding trails, then decided to take the full step and get a street bike. Started liking the Kawasaki Ninja, then grew out of it after a week, then rediscovered my off road style in the dual sport style. Looked into the Kawasaki Versys, but it was a tad bit out of my price range. Then I found the Suzuki V-Strom and it has my heart as of now.

Took the MSF course last week as a birthday present to myself, I am now hunting down my first bike. I have my eye on a V-Strom at a dealer I'm going to look at over the weekend and hopefully I'll make it mine.

Planned out adding Givi crash bars, adding a lowering link (as my friend who recommended me this site let me ride his and it was a tad tall for me), and adding a Scorpio Ride Alarm setup. I picked up a Scorpion EVO-R710 as my first helmet and it should be in tomorrow. My gear plans are going to be a FLY Butane 4 jacket, Dainese VE1N Knee guards, and use my current Oakley SI gloves and Steel toe boots I have.

Other than that, lots. And Lots. AND LOTS of practice off of roads before I get going on roads. Read the forum rules and hope to see a lot of you out on the road and maybe at meets. Already met one member and hope to get to know more of you!

Other hobbies are Guns, Airsoft, Computers, things to work on, and building projects!

keep in mind that the vstrom 650 is still a big girl for off road. not that it can't, but big and top heavy. it's a great bike, tho. you might want to check the for sale adds here.

btw, i used to live in lakewood forest, grant and n. eldridge.

Welcome to the club, if you can, try some dirt bike riding, it's a lot of fun and teaches you many valuable skills that will improve your road riding!!

Welcome to the site!

I had a 2004 V-Strom 650. It was a great street bike and a VERY marginal dualsport. A better front tire (TKC-80) might help, but I just never liked taking it on anything more than a well groomed county road. I most definitely would not take it on any trails!

If you really want to ride trails and still be street legal, I would suggest something like a Suzuki DRZ400 or a plated Honda XR400. You can put a set of knobbies on them that will work on street and dirt.

The biggest piece of bike related advice I have is buy a used bike as your first bike. Until you get some seat time, you really won't know what you want 100% (if ever... hehe). But after riding a while, you will have a better idea of what you want the bike to do and how it fits you. Vstrom 650's can be had for great deals with all the accessories already installed. Best of all, if you don't tear it up, you can probably turn around and sell it for close to what you paid for it if you decide on something else. If you buy new, you eat that instant depreciation as soon as you roll out of the lot. Then you still have to pony up the cash for all the accessories, which adds up fast! Finally, if you decide to sell the bike, you will come up WAY short because you'll never get out of it what you put into it. This is often the case with pretty much any bike you might buy. I like a new bike as much as the next rider, but save that for maybe your 2nd, 3rd, or even 4th bike ;-)

Looks like you are on the right path with respect to protective gear. That is great! :thumb:

I suppose I should have rephrased my desire. I enjoy the style the Versys and the V-strom bring, the "dirty" sport bike flavor. I'm most likely never going to be going trailing or climbing logs or mudding or anything of that sort. But if I happen to hit a dirt road, I want to know that me and my cargo aren't going to be troubled by it. So my desire is probably a 95% street 5% dirt performance. Reason why I felt the Strom was for me.

That, and paired with my very low budget I pretty much only have room for a 300, or a V-strom as I've found a few within low budget values. No "new" bikes in my horizon anytime soon, so I'm hunting used.

The rain on saturday cut my trip off so I wasn't able to make it up to my dealer with a Used V-strom. I'm going to try during the week to see if I can get into it.

I do have some experience with a V-strom already. I got the privilege to ride the V-strom of the member who introduced me to this forum. He has his setup exactly how I want mine setup and it was a dream to ride. Pretty tall, and front heavy as I found out when I let it down at a stop, but dang crash bars made it bullet proof.

The V-strom is tall for my preference, or at least comfort level as of now so I might add a lowering link for a few months or a year to get my skills up without worrying about only having the balls of my feet able to hold up the bike. But the givi bars would keep anything from happening to the body, should I lose it from time to time.

I have been prowling the Sales here on Twt, but I am really hung up on my dealer's ABS V-strom, if it wasn't for that ABS and the fact that its got all 3 boxes already, I'd be more interested in the ones linked Tourmeister, but I am paying attention!

Once I get my skills up, I WILL come up there Morgstange! Brenham sounds like fun!
