Hmmm... twice in one year would be nice.

Hello Texasrider 58 Current plan is to take about a week. Heading to beginining in Dell City Texas on 4th, riding throughout the week, heading home the following Sunday. Of course, all dependent on weather, how many wish to join, riding skills, using some of the bypasses of those joining are not up for the more technical sections, amount of carbohydrate supplements that may or may not be consumed, YOu know, the standard variants. Best Regards Mark Oh yes, what bike, how would you rate your skills, ability, comfort level et cetera. Also, figure on camping every night unless ...............

I am for sure in. This will be my first BDR. I am new to adventure riding, but have a past history of Motor-cross. I will be using a BIG MC for this, a BMW R1250 GSA. i have no problem picking it up, but it is a heavy beast. I will make a call on the technical sections real time. i plan on trailering to Dell City, so need to figure out a place somewhere near there to park my jeep and trailer. Was thinking an airport. I am VERY flexible on time and can go extra days if needed. Wouldn't mind doing a hotel a couple nights to re-charge physically. I will partake in the carb loading for sure. i am also a photographer and do video, so we will have a good post ride tirp video when alll is siad and done. I am really looking forward to this.

Hello JOToPe; did you ride it S to N or vice versa. I rode it three years ago from South to North. Any thoughts or advise you wish to share?

First time was in 2016 with my son and a fellow inmate. We started in Cloudcroft but a cratered water pump cut our trip short. Did it again this past June with a bunch of Two Wheeled Texans and started in Ruidoso and rode to Bernalillo then back home to central Texas. There is a write up by Trail Boss on TWT forum. If I get to my computer I’ll post the link.

There is sand in a few sections that can get deep, especially when summer heat makes the sand dryer and powdery. The area west of the White Sands Missile Range on Section 2, and Section 6 between Grants and Cuba has desert riding that is beautiful and can be touch and go where the sand is deep, especially in the switch back areas. Just take it easy and slow when you get in those areas. Otherwise, throttle out the straight sections to keep a light front end. Others may chime in on what areas were more technical. I ride an AT and re-routed around Chloride Canyon's steep rocky section. The Flying Frenchman got his inmate name riding that section for a good reason.

Hey JoToPe; Sounds great, would love to see the link.

Last time doing the NMBDR for me was in 2017 & we started as three riders. Met several times in advance and All agreed on sanity and not looking to set a land speed record. Long days ride to Dell City, on BDR next morning.
Day one - first guy takes wrong road as he got sick of waiting for us (me). He ended up crashing (again),got his leg caught under those hard boxes and broke his leg. Laid on side of road for 5 hours until found by a couple of cowboys who took him to a regional hospital. We (remaining 2) had no ideas where he was due to zero cell coverage. We (2) make it to Weed before rain, hail and sleet hit us hard. First night of camping in mountain paddock with tents icing up over night.
Next day (2nd day of BDR) to Cloudcroft & overnight in Ruidoso.
Next day (3rd day of BDR) made it to T&C camping at Elephant Butte lake.
Next day (4th day) made it west of Reserve and camped,
Next day (5th) made it to Grants. Other fellow felt I wasn't riding fast enough flew past me never to be seen again. [Next day his new R1200GSA] caught fire between his legs due to faulty coil and too much fuel. Used all his water to put out the burning bike. Took BMW rescue a day and a half to find him (via spot). Me - I overnighted in Grant, next day went to Sandia BMW, they were great and lent me what I needed to service my R1200GSA, and I had an amazing trip back towards Houston and home. Didn't mean to write a diatribe, just kept going. Oh yeah, guy who broke his leg blames me too for not keeping up.
I was having too great of a wonderful time marveling at natural beauty of the ride, watching rattles fight and doing my usual "life is the journey, not always the destination". Remember to balance on two wheels. Best Regards AdvenchaB4Demencha

I will have to see as time gets closer. I have a Vstrom. The DRZ would fun but not as comfortable. Camping sounds fun. I would ride from home and meet there if I went.

I would love to go but I'm STILL recovering from a complete patella tear(knee cap) repair back in February. Rehab has been a slog.

Sorry to hear that !! I've been nursing a knee as well for the last two months. Finally getting back most range of motion. Hope you convalesce well. Take care

Funny thing is my right knee started hurting over a month after my right foot got pinned under my pannier when I went down on the NMBDR. This time my foot was 180-degrees from my body, and I thought for sure a broken ankle or spiral fracture was in my future. I got lucky, or so I thought. Still trying to nurse my knee with this stuff.

My wife swears by Turmeric. Says it really helps all her joint pain. Hope it's helping for you as well. Failing that, there's always bourbon..................

Yeah, After seeing the carnage, I only use them for road trips, not off-road trips. Nelson Rigg makes some affordable soft bags that have the roll and strap down water resistant closures like you see on rafting waterproof bags. They've been quite useful. I'd like the Mosko bags but have an aversion to coughing out a $1,000 for some bags I may end up tearing the heck out of.

Hi Mark. Would be interested in going. Have a 2019 Africa Twin. Was looking to do one of the BDRs and came across this post, so thank you for posting. Mike

Good Morning Mike; Sounds good. Was riding with a friend who has an 'AT' and observed it's a very capable bike. Feel free to continue to chip in with ideas on the trip. It's still up in the air whether we transport bikes over to Santa Fe and ride down to beginning and then back to Santa Fe or if everyone is okay with a long days road travel to either Southern or Northern starting point. Let us know your back ground, riding skills and levels. As I'd mentioned before, We're not looking to set a land speed record. So much is dependent upon what the weather does which seriously affects our potential progress. Look forward to hearing from you. Mark Corsetti

Mark, I am flexible as to how and where we start, no issues riding a day to get to the start point as I will be riding over from Houston area anyway. Skill level is mostly on road bikes for many years. Recently bought the AT and have been putting miles on It to get accustomed to it. Recently bought a set of Motoz tractionator adventures for this route. I am good with a steady pace, not in any hurry other than heading back to Houston on Sunday for work Monday. I am up for what the group decides on a route since we will be together to help each other out. Looking forward to camping as well.

I just bought the Mosko Moto soft panniers to fit on my Givi racks for the same reason. I can't afford to break a leg!
