Loose Rocks and Falling Riders in Big Bend

:tab We did that NE corner the first day. We were originally heading for the Solitario and took a wrong turn :-P There were definitely some challenging sections!

:tab We did the NW Cienega stuff the last day. Most of it was not real technical, but there was a creek bed section that was pretty rocky and rough. Then we hit the silt and gravel river bed. I love that stuff.

:tab Did you guys do the down and back on Fresno Canyon? The river bed sections of that are a blast!!

That is exactly the order we did; Northeast first day and Northwest last day.We did manage to find the Solitario that first day, though. We missed a few small sections that didn't make a loop here or there but we rode the better part of it. I liked the silt and river bed stuff in Casa Piedra too.

We rode the Fresno canyon part on day three or four after we had done the Chorro Vista run. While up at Chorro, we hiked down to an overlook above what we thought was Madrid Falls and we thought from looking at the map that we could hike from the end of the Fresno Canyon road easily to get to the falls and get wet, however, we hiked up the wrong canyon and could never actually get to the water we had seen. I do not think we even made it close to where we had been the day before. Things appear much differently at those drastic elevation changes. We later talked to some of the Rangers and they said we were around 7 miles away from Madrid Falls. Either way, we found water, but it was entirely too dangerous and we were too lazy to try to get to it. I will post up pics later as I chronicle the adventure further. I know some of the other guys got better pics as well, so hopefully they will post up. It is crazy pretty out there in that section of the park. Did yall hike at all in there?

Some of the people hiked. I did not.

We did Chorro Vista as well. Lots of fun. It would be sweet if that connected to the South end of Fresno and all accessible by motorcycles. There was talk of that happening so that it could be turned into a loop.

Yes that would be very nice. We didnt hear Barrett or the other rangers talk about extending that trail, but they did mention about possibly opening the Botella trail to dual sports and that would run all the way into the Casa Piedra trailhead. He really seemed excited to have us there and riding and wants to make more access where he can. We had occasion to visit with the regional director for the TPWD as well as some other big wig from Austin whose name I cannot recall and they were telling us they would like to do more, but as with everything, money plays a big factor. They were in for the big cattle roundup. Apparently, they want the cattle off the ranch because it was eating up money and manpower to feed and care for them. While we were there, they brought in as bunch of rangers and volunteers to go out on horseback and round them up. They brought in around 90+ head while we were there and penned them up at Sauceda for a big auction they were to have last weekend. It was a pretty cool site to see all those cows and cowboys coming down the road. Once again I think some of our group got pics. We got the vibe that the cattle were a sore subject for them somehow, and somehow the area ranchers cattle were grazing in the parks and were creating problems.

It was interesting to hear their points of view. They want to open the park up to more responsible riders etc.. but worry about full off road vehicles (dirtbikes and quads) due to damage etc.. They seemed to think that requiring plated bikes would help weed out a lot of the riff raff. Hopefully, as DS riders we can all maintain a positive relationship with them and they will continue to not only keep it open, but expand the areas we can ride. We were very mindful of where we went and staying on designated motor vehicle trails, as tempting as it was! We were thinking how much nicer it would have been to be able to ride through the park down to Lajitas without taking 170 and the extra 50 miles that entails, and mentioned it to them, but Barrett told me that there is currently too much archeologically significant areas along the bike trail that runs down that way and it probably would not happen. Sure would have been an awesome ride to jump in that Fresno Canyon and run it all the way to 170. We saw the canyon signs from 170.

From the first day- a short vid to give you a quick feel for the terrain.

Very nice. Keep it up.
I've been to the ranch. Don't remember any of those wide, high vistas from the start of your report. Where is that area ?

they had a big rain just before we got there. the washouts were a little deeper but the dust wasn't bad at all for the first 2-3 days. and what a great group of guys, it was like summer camp for adults with motorcycles.

Y'all spend any quality time at the Starlight? Always some real characters there. Foods good also.

That is a LONG haul from the Bunkhouse. You have to first head West to get back to Hwy 170. If that run down to Lajitas was open, it would be MUCH better for getting to/from the park from Terlingua.

I agree! About 150 miles round trip and we did ride it one day, but it was a pretty awesome ride and nice day off from the hard riding we had been doing. Scenery was worth the haul. Only problem was, we arrived around noon or 1 and starlight didn't open til 5, so we had to settle for refreshments on the porch and missed out entirely on the nightlife. That will be scheduled next trip, I assure you. We couldn't even get a bite to eat at that time of day, but were pretty full from breakfast still since we had become accustomed to loading up and missing lunch.

Agreed, we could not have asked for better company for the week. Although I dont think I could have stood another week with J.R. or Roylene! Heck, it was summer camp!

Hey Vinny, I think the pics you are talking about are from south of the ranger station in Chorro Vista and maybe Guale mesa. To me, this is the most spectacular region of the park for eye candy. If I camp there again, it will be at Guale.

If I had gotten a pic of Roy's wreck I wouldn't post it. I'd be selling it to Americas funniest home videos. Sorry Roy, but that **** was hilarious
