Yes that would be very nice. We didnt hear Barrett or the other rangers talk about extending that trail, but they did mention about possibly opening the Botella trail to dual sports and that would run all the way into the Casa Piedra trailhead. He really seemed excited to have us there and riding and wants to make more access where he can. We had occasion to visit with the regional director for the TPWD as well as some other big wig from Austin whose name I cannot recall and they were telling us they would like to do more, but as with everything, money plays a big factor. They were in for the big cattle roundup. Apparently, they want the cattle off the ranch because it was eating up money and manpower to feed and care for them. While we were there, they brought in as bunch of rangers and volunteers to go out on horseback and round them up. They brought in around 90+ head while we were there and penned them up at Sauceda for a big auction they were to have last weekend. It was a pretty cool site to see all those cows and cowboys coming down the road. Once again I think some of our group got pics. We got the vibe that the cattle were a sore subject for them somehow, and somehow the area ranchers cattle were grazing in the parks and were creating problems.
It was interesting to hear their points of view. They want to open the park up to more responsible riders etc.. but worry about full off road vehicles (dirtbikes and quads) due to damage etc.. They seemed to think that requiring plated bikes would help weed out a lot of the riff raff. Hopefully, as DS riders we can all maintain a positive relationship with them and they will continue to not only keep it open, but expand the areas we can ride. We were very mindful of where we went and staying on designated motor vehicle trails, as tempting as it was! We were thinking how much nicer it would have been to be able to ride through the park down to Lajitas without taking 170 and the extra 50 miles that entails, and mentioned it to them, but Barrett told me that there is currently too much archeologically significant areas along the bike trail that runs down that way and it probably would not happen. Sure would have been an awesome ride to jump in that Fresno Canyon and run it all the way to 170. We saw the canyon signs from 170.
