Is all that "wetness" on tire fork oil?

Y'all need seal savers. Full length ones. Especially with that mud. They really do work.
Yeah the spare bike we left back in the trailer has them. Cutting the water bottle into a hook got it done. Hopefully the mud is behind us.

Where were we…..oh that’s right, y'all are at work and we are out here living the dream! We were going to crush some pavement but I eyeballed a powerline that looked to have all the makings of putting us in the rough, back to where we once belonged.

Electrified, we seemed to be on the Yampa Bench now and I was thinking, what the heck is a Yampa?

Sounds like something from the first Star Wars movie, the real first one. Yampa is an edible plant along the river edge that the Ute Indians ate. There you have it, probably code for peyote. I am the walrus.

Doesn’t feel like Colorado anymore, feels super isolated, and we haven’t seen a subaru in over 4 hours. Winning. But what is Grape doing?

Power line was super cool, played out after about 8 miles, we transitioned into our next dirt. May have been some mail hauling.

Took a little break. A lot was happening in these last hours of riding.

Winding down into “our” canyon for the night. Wish these walls could talk.

1660237703791.jpeg

We blew off the bikes, threw on our shorts and went walkabout.

1660237883604.jpeg

This spot looks like a beer commercial, I’m doing my best to practice in case there are any producers watching and they need my services in the future.

1660237934963.jpeg

Temps cooled off so we fumbled about getting a makeshift camp setup. This will do. I guess.

All these places have their moments with riders and friends I still can recall. Some are dead and some are living. In my life I’ve loved them all. Sir Stevo

Wow. Just wow.

Will fairness ever exist?

Wow. Just wow.

Will fairness ever exist?

No, it won't. I can only hope that they payoff for being responsible and taking care of my people now will be that my body holds up long enough for me to get out and do some of that. I'd find a way to do it sooner if I could.

Another day, another crampsite. Kick the tires and light the fires. More like I’m tired and my pilot light blew out. Trying to find that choke button.

1660256503921.jpeg

Feeling primed and choked, we got our rears in gear and our gear back on the rears.

We had some rain in the middle of the night. Made for a really glorious morning riding in the damp desert with cooler temps.

Pretty quickly found ourselves saying goodbye to Colorado and hello to Utah. Sneaky snaked our way through some cool stuff.

1660257303987.jpeg

Told the boys it would be an easy day. Nothing hard, should be seamless. Huh.

Left the comfort and cush pavement to get into Ashley NF, on a dirt road, that will take longer…..makes perfect sense to me. My brain is so programmed to loathe pavement, I am working on that, to take it all in and enjoy everything my eyes are getting to see. Is that an old man thing? Dang it, I know I know.

1660257059000.jpeg

And I’ve learned getting to camp early isn’t as cool as taking more breaks throughout the day. Dang it, I know I know.

1660257338654.jpeg

We got on some semi obscure 50” stuff. I had been nervous about my routing through here. This was either going to work out….or not, in a big reroute sort of way. We did a reroute but it was small….and I guess a good thing?

1660257515443.jpeg

One semi-pro tip, historically I have spent too much time routinely looking at the distance to destination readout on my GPS throughout the day. I hid it on this trip and I’m not going to keep to a set destination per say. Can’t be behind the eight ball if you aren’t aiming for a pocket. I just want to play with my balls and not worry about scoring. Dang it, I know I know.

We poked out of the other end and we are on point. In Wyoming, all is well.

1660257099299.jpeg

Except for this George Clooney and Mark Wahlberg super cell trying to sink our orange submarines, we been cruising it today, crazy diversity. We just snuck between cells, found an awning to wait it out. Plan B about to unfold, don’t see camping tonight in our future.

We pressed pause at Jered’s place. We were out of the rain for a spell and I was able to update the report and the boys went shopping. Grape’s bark buster lost the bolt on the bar end….and the insert. We passed through Mountain View Wyoming and scored a powersports moto place. They didn’t have loose bar ends, but they had a used snow mobile for sale and the parts manager went into help mode. And Garbear, as we have affectionately started calling Bmullex on this trip, instructed them to take the snow mobile bar end to the back and cut the snow mobile section off. Still wasn’t quite right, had to wrap the split bolt dealeywhopper in duct tape to take up slack. Good to go. Use these guys if you need it, helpful fellers. Disregard the broken mirror.

Our plan was to boondock crazy up in some remote BLM camping, but the area was blasted with rain on my radar app. So we threaded the needle on the storms, slabbing it out with Plan B to get our hineys further north than our camp plan, then we can make up time tomorrow to get back on track.

1660277641371.jpeg

We scored a dive in this town. Had to work a bit to find a place with vacancy, downstairs room, and doors on the outside. I was being picky, other places weren’t feeling right for the bikes, I could care less for my human accommodation.

1660277043655.jpeg

That taken care of, more triage. Grape’s counter shaft seal must have fell prey to the tank trap….she was leaking. He was running 14/50 gearing as well, pulled the sprocket, put on a 13 from the pack to match me and the Bear, checked the o ring, good, some muck in there though. Cleaned it up, thinking about having a seal shipped down the road. TBD.

1660277125909.jpeg

Note to self….Garbear had this cool adapter from Motion Pro that fits your tire tool and gives you 3/8 drive capability….and 1/4” on the other side. I’m getting one soon. Motion Pro, feel free to send me one when you get a bunch of orders.

1660277250175.jpeg

1660277270343.jpeg

Next, Grape’s busted headlight lens…..We borrowed clear packing tape from the moto sports place, thought we solved that one. But we noticed it wasn’t illuminating in our rain drive to this oasis of a town. Triage team discovered the rear wiring got snagged by the rear tire, wires tore up, shorted stuff out and blew fuse. Got that sorted, lights a working. But it’s possible the license plate light won’t be working the rest of this trip. Shh.

Exploded all our gear into the room. Wish you had smellavison.

Now, food. We hoofed it down to one of the only eateries up in this mutha. Can’t complain, it was good stuff. Texans approving Mexican food in Wyoming? What’s up with that. Discovered the folks running it were from Chihuahua Mexico. Basically Texas.

1660277465655.jpeg

Next, Grape’s GPS was acting the fool. We played various games tricking it the past couple of days, but at best only had a track line to follow, no maps. Now Grape got to use his roll up keyboard he’s been packing for hundreds of miles and micro pc plugged into the back of the motel TV. Got the GPS working. Pretty slick.

So we started in Colorado this morning, made our way into Utah and are now in Wyoming. All in all a good day, good forward progress made and epic stuff happening. The girls are tucked away and we are doing the same.
