Quick ride this morning before rain clouds came down the mountain. Chimayo nm.

20221004_132759.jpg

"Chimayo is the name of a hill in New Mexico believed by the Native Americans to have sacred healing powers within its soil.
Visitors haul away an estimated 25 to 30 tons each year, either for themselves or for others unable to make it to Chimayo on their own. The uses of the holy soil vary, but those who call upon its healing powers may rub the dirt upon their bodies, sprinkle it on their food, or brew it for tea."

20221004_131733.jpg

"Chimayo’s fame spread to the larger world around the year 1810, when a local man saw a light springing from one of the hills near the Santa Cruz River. After following it to its source, he found in the earth a crucifix bearing a dark-skinned Jesus.

The local villagers paid homage to the relic and then took it to a church in nearby Santa Cruz. Mysteriously, during the night the crucifix returned to its original location. After this happened two more times, the locals built a small chapel to house the crucifix in Chimayo."

Made a ride down the mountain to Chimayo and the old adobe church called Santuario de Chimayo. This is the place with the healing soil. You get the soil in a little side room next to the old church called the pocito. In the middle of the room is a small well in the floor that holds the powdery dust. Yeah, that's some random cuzi I found laying nearby to stuff in the bottle. I'll polish it up some later.

My next door neighbor's family is Catholic and their son is eat up with cancer. My science background puts me at a disadvantage in such matters but I believe the holy spirit finds his way into human hearts by many different methods. If this is meaningful to my neighbor then so be it.

The church is on six acres that has way more to see. It's actually three churches. This is a big painting in the church for indigenous people.

The chief's eyes are relentless. I'm not an art person but it's astonishing how an occasional artist can capture the essence of life in a painting.

Big old carved wooden door out on the grounds.

They have several big tour buses bringing lots of folks here every day. I've read 30,000 per year and 300,000. From what I've seen 300k is more likely. It's supposed to be one of the top destinations for faith tours in the US.

You can read all about the history etc. here.

Afterwards I went to the Rancho de Chimayo restaurant. They make this drink that works right well. They also dip the glass rim in a fine cinnamon and sugar mix...kinda like salt on the rim of a margarita. Enjoy!

Well said 👍🏻👍🏻

"Relentless" is the right word. Wow. Each figure's character and individual personality is clear.

Great stuff, Greg. Hope you'll share more

I love the architecture of the missions and the adobe buildings in New Mexico. Thanks for posting.
Found this handout interesting once you get the dirt and if needed a container. Donations are accepted as well.

Getting Holy Dirt From Chimayo

A handout I’d picked up in the sanctuary offered clear instructions on applying the soil: “The Holy dirt is not to be eaten or to be drunk,” it read. It suggested some silent prayers to say as you rub the dirt over the part of your body in need of healing while invoking the name of Jesus.
I truly hope your neighbors son is healed from the cancer and thank you for caring about your neighbor and friends.

Over last weekend, I trucked my bike up to visit a friend in Gunnison, CO and hopefully do day rides for three days. The weather was cold and rainy, but we got one ride in going north past Created Butte for half a day before heavy sleet and rain got the best of us. We were prepared except for the very porous "waterproof" gloves that allowed our fingers to freeze.

The other days, we caged around the area.

We stopped in at St. Elmo where we picked up a neat map with a good loop we might ride another day.

@kickstand~prophet Here's a breakfast shot just for you. I ate at the W Cafe per your recommendation but forgot to snap a pic. It was good. This was next door at the Backcountry Cafe, also delicious.

Beautiful aspens. Thanks!

I was at South Fork a week ago to do some exploring but the cold rain and wind did me in. Guess it's that time of year. Fun looking loop. St. Elmo is historic and, if you like, going up to Tin Cup pass is a nice ride from there. The west side, though, is quite different. Those two sides of the same mountain are like Jeckel and Hide.

Good info on Tin Cup Pass. I've put it on my Wanna Ride list. 👍

Leaving St. Elmo last weekend, I saw the sign for Hancock Pass, an expert section of the COBDR. Another buddy and I rode that in 2020 and it was quite challenging.

A day ride of a different sort. My wife signed us up for a Square to square ride, a 30 mile bicycle ride from Bentonville town square to Fayetteville town square via the Razorback greenway….and my butt is sore but we had a great time !

It can get rainy and cold quick that way. Time to glove shop.

Holiday weekend equals ride! @Mattpanter and I looped around three counties, Bell, Coryell, and Burnet. Very dusty, zero water crossings but fun nonetheless.

Westside Trail Report 10-11-22 weekend preview
Got a good ride in this Tuesday at the SHNF Westside, got in 3 loops with a good group of riders.
First loop Starting from Kelly's Pond Trailhead
Was Woodpecker to Big Loop going counterclockwise to Woodpecker to Honeymoon and back on Kelly's Pond Trail. Had 10 riders on this loop so we had a little dust from time to time. Trails were good with Big Loop the best. Expect about 15 miles on this loop.
Second loop was all of Woodpecker to 208 Trailhead north on String to North Balloon to NW Trailhead to South Balloon to 208 Trailhead and back on Kelly's Pond Trail. Woodpecker above 1375 is great all trails were in good condition lots of loose sugar sand up North and a few down trees with easy go arounds. Expect about 40 miles on this route.
Last loop was a short one taking the fs roads to ride Big Loop. This was my favorite today and made for a good finish on the day. Expect about 10 miles doing this loop.
Dust is not an issue as long as you space out between riders. I kept about 30 seconds between us on all but the first loop. Makes a huge difference and a more enjoyable ride. Hopefully we'll get some rain before the weekend, 1 to 2 inches would be perfect. On the Sandy section it would soak right in. More of the clay on the trails like parts of Woodpecker and Kelly's Pond Trail might be a different story. Should be a good one, temperature is good. Enjoy

Is the guy to your left in the first picture a Brit????? I think he doesn't like the photographer

Looks like fun all round

Peeped my Arkansas atlas last night and traced out a couple hunnert mile route to just east of Fallsville on 21, a little road marked 414 on my atlas is actually NC (Newton County) 9101 off 21 that crosses Buffalo creek before it becomes the Buffalo river…..well I shoulda paid closer attention to the topo lines on the Altlas or maybe started turning around when the water diversion humps got large on the descent to the creek but I just had to see the bottom and the truth is Kowalski and I barely got out of that one. The uphill was as rough as anything I’ve ridden on my KLR650 yet! IMHO that road is not big bike friendly and I’d take friend in case something went awry.
The fall colors are lovely all over the Upper Buffalo wilderness, the Boxley valley and all over NWA. We haven’t quite peaked yet, but rain has been short lately so I don’t know how long the colors will last!
Stopped by the old Stamps store/ Osage clayworks near Osage and had a nice rest and got a couple Christmas gifts. Nice people in there, and pretty, handmade goods. 👍🏻

Looking at that Tin Cup map I don’t remember road 20 so I zoomed in , there was lots of exceeding the speed limit the day I rode through there . Cumberland , Columbia , alpine tunnel and Cinnamon .

SHNF ride report
It did rain, just enough. No dust and whoops are actually fun when not deep sand. Zebra was a hair greasy but no big deal. @GSTJOHN and @my6 and I were out. I met @shooter_t1 on Zebra as the other 2 guys took road in before last couple of miles. My6 took an inside line, hit a log and high sided. No real damage, just chilled for a few minutes. Then when mounting his horse, he high sided again on top of me sitting by him. At this point he figured calling it a day was a good idea. We rode a very spirited pace and my6 was right there all day. It was a good day. Now I'm whipped, this was 2nd day of back to back trail riding. I try to stay away from that now.
