Post your Day Rides Here!

My rides from last weekend. I generally do early morning rides to avoid this Dallas heat streak. Revisited Paris and some county courthouses.

My buddy and I did some riding in the Leakey area near Garner State Park last week. As for why riding in the continuing Texas chiminea weather 🔥, it was a matter of time and opportunity. We usually rode till about 3, which required the occasional application of water to our helmet liners and T shirts starting after lunch; hence the reason for the Igloo water bottle on the bike rack (we had drinks in the small cooler). The Frio River was really low, this pic is at the bridge on the north side of the park.

Checking out a crossing near Utopia. Truck went through near the right side with water up to the hub caps, so I thought crossing to the less traveled left side would be better - not! Left side got about 4 inches below the top of my front tire which wasn't too bad until I hit a large something hiding in the murky water and nearly lost it, but I quick jab of my right foot kept me upright...

After a bike rinse and a rider fill up on Gatorade, I pondered the next adventure...

Just a little at home yard ride yesterday. My soon to be son-in-law us been asking about riding dirt bikes. He had told me that he rode a couple times as a kid. I’ve been needing to dig the CRF 150F out from the back corner of the garage, so we decided yesterday was the day. I knew the tires would be flat and the battery dead so I got and put the charger on the battery while I rearranged things to get it out. Once the battery was mostly charged, tires aired and gas added… No start, well I checked for fuel to the carb, all good. Cranked some more and no joy. Pulled the plug and no spark. I dug out the CRF 110F which I was going to do anyway so he and my daughter could trade off. I put a little air in the tires and a splash of gas and 2nd kick it roared to life. Naturally I needed to test it out to make sure it was ready…

I went back to check on the 150 and there was nothing obvious so I went to plan B. I rolled out a 525 EXC. I gave the young man a quick demonstration of what this thing is capable of if you don’t respect it. He was pretty timid with the clutch and stalled it a few times then.

Then after Emily had been chasing him for awhile on the 110 I suggested that they switch. Emily said no way I can handle that bike it is way to tall and heavy. I told her I would get on behind her use my leg to hold the bike while she started and stopped. After a few good starts and stops she was able to do the “one cheek sneak” and get a foot to the ground. Here she is at 5’3” buzzing around the yard with Sam chasing on the 110.

Breakfast at Route 36. Big group today. We riding in Texas.

JT and I got in a little ride this morning. Took hwy 16 thru the canyons to Medina and then into Bandera for a breakfast taco.

Dodged the weekly Bandera parade and took 1077 to and thru the State Natural Area coming out on hwy 462, jogged south a bit to pick up CR 211, a quick right onto CR 121 (Ross Rd) to come back out on 462 close to Tarpley.

IMG_20230902_111118047~3.jpg

This is the Ross Rd crossing (and the only pic I took). We didn't expect there to be any water but the whole area southwest of Bandera was greener than here in Kerrville. They've been getting some rain.

From Tarpley we rode 470, turning onto N Little Creek and then B and R Rd to come out on hwy 187. From there we sprinted down 337. Detoured down one of my favorite little out n back roads. Hit Medina's gas station for someone's pnut sized gas tank. And 16 back to kerrville. Home by 1p.

Taking a break at "Cele Store" which is several miles east of Pflugerville. When I was 12, I would ride my XL75 here, buy a coke and talk to the old men out front who were always playing dominos. 41 years later, it still pretty much looks the same.

The store was also used in a scene for the movie "A Perfect World".

Breakfast at 77 cafe today. Good turn out from the Temple group.

Went for a spin around the lake and got a few miles in. I've been riding bigger bikes for so long I forgot how fun a smaller bike can be. I get to use ALL the gears! Not just run it up to triple digits in 2nd or 3rd. Anyway had to take a photo with a bit of water.

And then one of some open range. Really wanted to ride the cow path but I abstained.

Decided to run a similar loop tonight as I thought it would be a bit cooler. Was cooler but humidity was crazy. Oh well, still nice to go for a short ride. Sunset was pretty and some pretty clouds.

Trying out a Madstad windshield. A bit ugly, but it is quieter.

Me again. Went out today and finally found a bit f moisture north of us a ways. Ended up riding about 125 miles. 50 this morning and 75 this afternoon. Wife is in SA at the River walk with the DIL so figured I might as well take advantage of it. Stayed dry until I was about 25 miles from home this afternoon and then got hit by heavy rain. That is okay though, we need it and it washed what little mud I got on t he bike off.

Ron and I left Monday 9-13 headed to cape girardeau mo.
to meet up with the cannonball antique riders going coast to coast.
Followed them about 140 toward Branson before heading south through Arkansas Wednesday. Ride through Arkansas before returning home to Temple Friday. Those antique riders are dedicated folks. Great ride and roads were scenic.

Good Day, Yesterday I was able to get a ride in. I left New Braunfels and headed to the Hill Country Motorheads Motorcycle Museum. A easy ride taking 46 to 311 to 281 to 29. Once I arrived I was greeted with a smiling face. Was showed around the exhibit. This is a great museum. Being new to the riding area of Texas and not knowing many people. It was a pleasant visit. I look forward to returning. I also discovered there were additional Motorcycle museums in the area. They will have a Vintage show the 4th of November and I plan on being there. If you in the area stop by and say hello they have it all Minis, Dirt Bikes and Choppers. A great place to visit.

Looking forward to meeting additional people ... Seek Adventure

Had a bit of work to do this morning and when I got it finished up decided to go for a ride. Ended up a bit over 200 miles. It was hot. Had about 40 or 50 miles of gravel, so 80/20 or so, fits this motorcycle great.

The first portion, even after getting to some gravel is flat and straight.

But then, once I got to the river bottom over by Inez area it gets better. Beautiful little blacktop and open range area.

Saw a lot of really nice trees once I got up north of 111 towards Hallettsville.

Also several of these little bridges on some decent gravel roads.

Found some shade and stopped and had a protein bar and a bottle of water.

Roads made for the 390.

One of the roads on my route had new chip seal. Found some more shade and stop and had another bottle of water.

Another nice tree providing the shade. The cows were keeping an eye on me.

23-09-23-blacktop-4.jpg

Then as I started getting back closer to home some more flat straight gravel. At least a little shade so stopped and drank some more water.

23-09-23-back-to-straight-1.jpg

Sure not as exciting as some places, but still a good ride overall. Longest I have take non the 390 so far. The changes I have made to make it work for me all seemed to work as I hoped. This little bike is still amazing me with what it is capable of. So far I really like it.
