Re: Austin - anybody want to wrench/tech day?

Had a great time today. As usual, I failed to take enough pictures, but here is what I got:

Re: Austin - anybody want to wrench/tech day?

Look at all these people standing outside in shirt sleeves in the middle of winter! What are they thinking? :lol2:

So who all showed up and what did ya all work on?

Re: Austin - anybody want to wrench/tech day?

What were ya'll doing to Will's Trohpy?

What must your neighbors think now? "There goes the neighborhood!"

We should have sent Chuck to make sure we'd get more pics :-P

Re: Austin - anybody want to wrench/tech day?

Kurt,

Thanks for hosting. Hopefully next time I'll be able to get the bike out of the truck!

I've decided that I must be much better organized before I could host one. The most impressive part of the day was when asked for grease, Kurt points behind him, over the shooulder without looking and says, "On the white shelf, just left of center":bow:

Thanks again!

D

Re: Austin - anybody want to wrench/tech day?

It was really nice to meet everyone. I had to leave before Will got his bike back together. Hope it all went OK. Thanks for bringing my helmet Rebecca. All I can say is WOW!

Re: Austin - anybody want to wrench/tech day?

Will's bike needed a clutch slave seal. I think Snoopster took some pictures too, maybe she'll fill in some of the gaps. As far as being organized....what can I say...too many years of working on ambulance where you can reach for something without looking. You just know because you verify it is right there every morning. :-P

Re: Austin - anybody want to wrench/tech day?

From my feeble memory we had

Texastri
King of the Road
Cyclecat
Bronco78
Cherior
Uberhawk
bluedogok
Squeaky
Snoopster
Whoa
Birdwh
Woodbutcher
(????)Eddie?
Another from Houston someone help me out...

I think I'm still missing a couple.

We had a distinct lack of bikes to work on. Uber's jet kit didn't come in and neither did my springs but I did get my side racks from Happy Trails mounted. Whoa did some small something, but Will's Triumph was the only real work that got done. Oh, and one call-in repair from King of the Road. His bike quit not far from the house. He called for help, and described what sounded like a side stand switch issue and was able to get it going without further help.

Yeah, I had my signal switch dismantled and was about to look for a short when CycleCat (aka Chris) advised me to hold off. Something about springs/loose connectors etc scattering.

I was mostly polling people about things like checking valve clearance, engine rebuilds, body/glass work, paint, reading tire wear etc. We have a bunch of experience walking around. Very helpful, and still several things I forgot to check out, too easy to get sidetracked with this bunch.

Re: Austin - anybody want to wrench/tech day?

Hmmm... I sure would like to see some good pics of those Happy Trails racks Kurt ;-)

I'll take some tomorrow morning when I get home.

Re: Austin - anybody want to wrench/tech day?

Sorry I couldn't make it. I ended up taking my bike to the dealer for the thermostat AGAIN (3rd time!). You can read about the saga here

Re: Austin - anybody want to wrench/tech day?

The guys with Squeaky and Snoopster were Gavin (Skid) and Erik (Rainmaker)

Re: Austin - anybody want to wrench/tech day?

Had a great time meeting and greeting you all, I got the "F"er home fine, once Kurt gave me a little insight to the stand switch.
It was new to me. But now I know....
Anyway I look forward to riding with the TWT's in the future.
Ohh yeah and WAY TO GO BRONCO's, now to go through the Steeler's then on to the big Dance!!!!
(P.S. I am the one in the Denver Jersey in the photo's .... hehehehe)

Re: Austin - anybody want to wrench/tech day?

I had a good time. Wish I could have hung around a little longer. I wanted to see Squeaky try the DR. I also wanted to slip over to 130 and see what was happening there;-)

I have some pictures too, but haven't pulled them off the camera yet. I'll check and see if I have anything different than what is already posted.

My trip back home to my daughter's bball game was not without excitement though. Just as I was pulling up to the rec center, I saw smoke coming from near the elementary school, a quick lane check and I shot over to help two young boys try to put out a grass fire. I saw we didn't have a chance to get it out, so called 911. While I was talking, several people ran up with buckets and coolers of water. By the time the Sam Bass FD showed up (100 yards away), we had it out...basically. They hosed it down until it was all mushy. The young boys immediately fessed up and took the heat. They had also gone for help, then worked to fix there mistake. Good recovery in my opinion. And yes, we were all very careful and were not in any danger. I've worked a couple of ranch fires and have some experience.

Then I got to sit there and watch my daughter's team lose a heart breaker, all the time smelling like grass smoke. Not near as nice as wood smoke.

Re: Austin - anybody want to wrench/tech day?

The new clutch pushrod seal is working great, no leaks and tight as a drum. Great meeting everyone. Thanks to all my many assistants and particularly Kurt and his wife. They make some good coffee! I got out of Kurt's garage just before 6pm.

Well I got to try it, but just for a short time. The others were waiting on me to get going since we needed tog et back to Houston and still hadn't eaten lunch. I hopped on, grabbed my helmet, and went down the road to a field for a few minutes of fun. I loved it! Uberhawk asked if I wanted to try his out too, but I just didn't have time. As it was, I made us all late...

It was fun to get to see everyone. Thanks to all who tried to help me get my throttle lock on. It worked well for the slabbed ride home. I'll have to see about getting it to stay more permanently, but for now I won't mess with it too much.

We took pics on both Snoopster and Skid's cameras, so I'll pester them into getting them posted sooner rather than later.

A BIG thanks again to Kurt for having us all over there at his place. So when's the next one? I need to check my valves soon... ;-)

Clutch master cylinder (but couldn't get the circlip out), clutch slave cylinder (I think they were gonna do that), and clutch pushrod seal.

Working on that Triumph, as much as I loved my old speed triple, I was reminded of my biggest frustration when I had mine... any part you want to work on usually requires removal of 2-3 other parts first, and the variety of tools needed to do one simple job was maddening! ... Instead of having ten identical M5 allen screws, Triumph will use 3 torx screws, 2 phillips, 2 ten milllimeter hex-heads, and 3 allens. :headbang: You gotta empty the toolbox on the garage floor to do anything.

We retrofitted a cruise control to Squeaky's Strom that was made for another bike (did it hold?), did some chain & switch maintenence on numerous bikes, and mostly tire kicked.

I've concluded its a passive-aggressive behavior issue with the Brits.

I agree. I think they are over there saying: "Ahh... those Yanks think they know everything! We'll show them a thing or two!":-P

Try to figure out how to use the jack provided with a mid 80's Lotus Esprit, it is an exercise in futility.

Having worked for a British owned company, I know how they tend to be. We had a new saying after some of their "management" types came to the US corporate office in OKC. They specialized in "complex solutions to simple problems".

Did you get the pictures? It kicked them back the first time.

Nope, never got them. Saw the email, and it indicated about 500Kb of attachments, but never saw the attachments
