AirVenture 2010, aka: Oshkosh Air Show (pic intensive)

Wow, Scott, as usual those are just great images and way cool content. My Dad and I talked about making a trip up there togehter, but waited too long. Glad you followed through. Thanks for letting us tag along.

I've wanted to go since I was a kid. Now I've got my own kids, so I need to plan a family trip in the next few years. My dad was a pilot years ago and he's neve been either, so maybe a multi-generational trip to Oshkosh should be in the works for us. Thanks for the great photos and commentary. Looking forward to checking out the slideshow when I get home.

As I mentioned, I've attended AirVenture (the official name of the show) many times. I typically stay in Watertown or Madison, which are around 50 miles away. I never plan far enough in advance to get a good hotel room.

I've camped out three times.

The first time I put up a pup tent in the 'Camp Scholler' campground, which is the huge field immediately adjacent to the show area. The location was good, but staying in a pup tent during a thunderstorm isn't much fun .

The next year they had a one-time good deal at Scholler where you could rent a brand new pop-up tent camper. That was really great. The good thing about Scholler is that they have a big convenience store and a couple of temporary cafes right by the show entrance, which is within walking distance. You can park your RVs there, or if you get there early you can park your RV in a 'generator all night is ok' area. There is a dump station for the RVs.

The last time I camped I flew in and camped in the North 40.

The actual flying there and back was the experience of a lifetime.

Camping by the airplane seemed glamorous, but the reality kind of sucked. There were few services for the airplane campers unless you get there really early. The showers were a long hike, there are no stores on that part of the airport, and its a long wait to ride the bus to and from the show area.

After a couple of nights I rented a car and spent the last few days in a motel.
