Re: 2015 Uncle's Around the Bend, Desert, ADV, and Dos y Dos Challenges Mar 19 - 22 2

That is a very impressive time! Rider trumps bike model/technology etc. again. You spanked all the KTM prima donna in style - KLR.

...I also caught solorider and CDC sneaking out of Terlingua in Alpine on their infamous caravan. The drinking games of the last night took it's toll.

Typo, Scott's fast, but 2h 27minutes would be a 91mph average.

Great pictures Kat. And despite the difficulties of the day, I am so happy you enjoyed the ride! For a first timer on mud you are a natural. Don't worry too much about Q's shoes or fender. I've never seen the desert wet before this trip. And there is always plenty to see on pavement.

It was a fantastic day in every way. I mean it! :sun: I truly cannot wait for my next trip. Thank you for all your encouragement (and bike loan)! Mud and I will be friends one way or another :lol2:

Yep, even us Prima Donna aren't geared for that.

I will admit, the dude can ride that KLR. His fuel woes gifted me that pass. I thought he was ahead of me.

About the mud... the little ct90 did pack up the front fender just like the tw's did. Once the fender was removed, it did spin but the BACK fender was low and it packed up. Only removing the axle and sliding the wheel down enough unbinded the chain and let me dig out the back wheel.

Another oddity was that the mud coming around the rear push the center stand down and it was plowing along every step.

Once the front was removed and the rear unpacked, it did quite well again but by the time we got to Rio Grande Village, all were gone. We did the old ore and the ct90 did it superbly with the exception of drenching me in the deep water since the front fender was off.

What I know now is the absolute limits of the ct. When I reread those ride reports of a ride across Australia or a guy riding from Sydney to London on a postie, I will remember being stuck in the mud for two hours within 100 yards on the River Road.

Everett - it is a 4 stroke! ;-)

Oh how funny is that, yes it was 5 hours 27 minutes for approx 41 mph average.
41 mph average for 227 would be half as slow :)

I hade thought I would see Snakebitten again but but it didn't happen, he picked it up after I went to get the fuel, because I picked it up after I went to get the fuel lol

Not doing the course before I had thought that it was doable in just over 4 hours. But with too many wrong turns this time we'll do it again perhaps this summer and see.

Very upset that I didn't catch all the KTMs after starting near last, not that it's a race lol

Awesome Honda CT pictures.

Happy Trails,

Our group decided way in advance that we were going to skip the rides around Terlingua and go do some more exploring in the Mexico side of the Rio Grande. We planned two rides, a 160+ miles ride on Friday and a shorter one on Saturday. Friday was going to be southwest of Presidio and Saturday was going to be southeast of Presidio. We only managed to complete one for reasons everyone knows far too well, weather.
We encountered some muddy conditions early during the ride but once we started climbing into the sierra it was wonderful. I'll post a series of videos that exemplify the route. This is the first installment.

Wow, it looks like compared to the Desert and Adventure challenges the Dos y Dos was double the challenge! Mud, hail, and high water! :)

Part of our group was formed by Hugo, Scott, Israh, and myself. Norbert and Andy were riding pavement. We arrived at El Cipres ranch. We haven't been here in the last three years and were surprised to see young Bryan as a grown man. We were debating the night before about his whereabouts. We brought with us a care package and they were very happy to accept it. They invited us for some coffee, freshly made tortillas and fresh goat cheese. Israh got to ride Bryan's horse again.

The ranch looked so much different than the previous time. Everything was green and flowering. The livestock looked well fed and healthy. The whole family seemed to be happier.

We still had 140miles to go, so onward we went. Not too far from El Gaitan ranch there is this nasty climb that is long and full of babyheads.

As I mentioned before, everything looked a lot greener. They have peach trees, granadine, figs, apples, and they were all blossoming.

At the first long climb, one of us had a bit of difficulty dealing with so many babyheads.

Wow... that first vid of the climb was hair raising!! I jumped a couple of times just sitting here watching it :eek2: :lol2: My heart was pounding when it finished. That one BIG rock was a close call!

That one rock was trying to get you!

The whole time I was like, "DON'T FIXATE ON THE ROCK!!! DON'T FIXATE ON THE ROCK!!!" Then he swerved just in time... :lol2:

There were a few moments when I thought he might be going over the side as well, but then he'd swerve back just in the nick of time. I think he was doing that on purpose knowing it would make for a good video :-P

Great videos. It's always tougher than it looks and that "looked" tough.

This is how we spent our Saturday :sun: I am glad becuase I HATE MUD !!!!!!!!!! :lol2:

Thanks Snakebitten, Vinny, Tourmeister, RG, Solorider, and My6, that trail is lots of fun.

Here is some more! A few of us, maybe less than 15 advriders have been on this trail. We found it 4 years ago and this is the third time we have gone through. Every year that we have done, we have done something different. This year we explored a hill we couldn't climb before last January. Our excuse was and is that we were too heavy to attempt such a hard hill. We called it Gravity. It looked like it would pull you down at any attempt.

This one id Godzila!

The evening before the Mexican adventure, we started off at the High Sierra catching up with some life long buddies.

Then Edwin aka "Ponce De Leon" decided to check out a trail that we hadn't seen before on this route.
The video isn't the greatest but the trail went Way Way up there, pretty much out of site.
