I'm just here for the mountains - the Great Divide Ride 2017

At this point, I had more than 300 miles on the KTM 500's tripometer so it was time for a little roadside maintenance.

I keep hearing how the maintenance requirements for KTMs are so much more intensive than Japanese bike and that KTMs are also much less reliable than Japanese bikes. So, in an effort to prevent total engine failure I resolved to do maintenance on my bike by the book. If it says change the oil every 10 hours, then, by God!, I'm going to change the oil every 10 hours, even if that 10th hour is in the middle of a ride. I'm not taking any chances!!!

Trail side maintenance

That was awesome. Loved it

Hey All,
I have a few specific route questions. We routed around a few things last year that I'd like to add back in this year if possible.

Between Sargents and Ponca Springs, how was Marshall pass? Part of the road was washed out awhile back and I'm just wondering about the overall condition and difficulty.

Between Kremming and Steamboat Springs, was NF-185/NF-100 open?
That road was closed last year and we ended up taking CR-144 and CR-16 up into Steamboat.

thx

Awesome, thx. You didn't happen to notice if Camp O'Haver looked decent or not?

Where is Stoney Hill people are mentioning...between Cuba and Abiqui?

Is that the sweet *** lake you see when crossing over Marshall Pass? It looked like heaven to me. Let me find the picture.

Yeah it is. Duh, google images. Looks perfect. I'm going to plan several camping and hotel options for each day. Much easier to research at home than with spotty cell service and fading sunlight.

That maintenance interval is meant for KTM's intended use of racing or off road riding. It's ok to follow the 4X extended interval option for idling on dirt roads. Lol

No way, Man!!! Fingers in ears..."La La La La....I can't hear you..."

Milton did not have anything other than air in his tubes (and didn't have that once the tire went flat. :-P )
Actually the rear tire was Slimed, and it went flat.
Not due to puncture or pinch however; the valve stem sheared off,
coating the rim with yucky blackened Slime.
Days later a nail was discovered in the same rear tire,
when it was removed the the blackened slime oozed out thru the nail hole.
Tube and air pressure unaffected.

... the gas station in Datil closes at 5 pm on Sunday and they don't have pay at the pump. Which means if you get there at 5:01 pm you won't get any gas. And that's exactly what happened.

About a dozen riders arrived at the gas station in Datil between 5:01 and 5:20. The old guy who runs the place (presumably the owner) was there when the first group arrived at about 5:01 but he steadfastly refused to sell us any gas, despite our multiple pleas. I didn't personally speak to him but those who did said he was anything but pleasant in his response to our requests for help. "You should plan better" or something along those lines seemed to be his answer to our request for a little fuel. How frustrating!

I was standing at the door when another rider,
went so far as to play the Christian card on the old geeser.
"Are you a Christian, sir? You're not a Christian, are you?"
Old man remarked the books were closed and we should plan our trips better.
I dunno. Maybe this happens all the time.

Milton, thanks for correction.

The lesson from our experience, IMHO, is there are some things Slime and Ride-On can fix and some they can't fix.

I do not know about how good the 500 was. We kept passing you on dirt roads too............ :)

You passed me on dirt roads? What was I doing? Did you pass me while I was riding (i.e. physically moving) at my normal pace or was I stopped?

No question about it, I'm a slow rider. But, dang, I don't recall another group passing me multiple times when I was actually riding. :sun:

Finally on this trip we conspired to take more photos of Richard, who usually ends up being the one to take photos of everyone else.

You did a fine job and I am very, very appreciative. Thank you so much. :)

The 1st half of Day 2 looks like fun.
I'm sorry I missed it. However,
I felt pretty beat up from the 1st day.
Hadn't ridden in a year, out of shape,
And my little get off at speed tripped up by
sun dried mud casts of tire tracks

On Day 2 I elected to take the pavement to Cuba,
where I waited for the boys

Waitin' for the guys

At filling station across the street I noticed this ad in the bathroom

The small print reads "Naloxone can reverse the effects of a prescription painkiller or heroin overdose. Visit adoseofrealiy.com"

Cool to see the photos from the trip! By a weird coincidence, I ran into Phil (Liteitup) in Mexican Hat in the morning as we were both packing up at a hotel. We were doing a trip through Utah/Arizona and hadn't seen but maybe three dual sport bikes the entire trip until then. Keep the photos coming!
