Ride, Crash, Fly, Go Home.... My Trip to Arkansas...

Bill carefull with the meds. A friends of mine had shingles and was doing the meds and watching QVC.
A week later all kinds of crap showed up via UPS that he doesn't remember ordering!:eek2:

I guess the lesson is to be careful with your credit cards :-)

Yah, put em away if you are ripped.

What?? So me sitting here on pain pills with the Touratech book in one hand and my wallet in the other is a bad thing?

And what the heck am I going to do with the Panniers for a GS1200 that arrived on the porch today!! Oops...:trust:

Just an update for those of you that care.

If you were ever wondering how much an helicopter ride from Jasper to Fayetteville costs, it is right about $14,150.14.:eek2: In a couple weeks I'll find out just how much that insurance is willing to pay. The ambulance ride down the hill was around $1200, and the surgery was a little over $5000. The only thing I haven't gotten the price on was my little ER stay in Fayetteville.

Now as for me, I'm getting better, but it's still a ways to go. I get to go back to work on Monday on restricted duty so that's nice. It will keep me from getting bored so easily. I still have very little use of my right arm so I'm learning how to eat, shave, brush teeth and do all sorts of other things with my left hand. I think that's actually a good thing since it will just make my left hand better in the long run.

I start physical therapy in 3 weeks and I don't really know how long I will be in it for. But I guessing that I won't be back on a bike until late August. At least I will miss the ultra hot riding season in TX so that's not a great loss. I'll be healed up for the fall riding season.

Chuck came over about a week ago out of the blue and told me to open my garage door. Then he proceeded to pull off my handle bars and replace them with new ones that he ordered. Along with a new bar weight that I managed to rip off during the slide. Thanks Chuck, you're awesome!!

And Becca and Graeme came up from Houston last weekend to keep me company. Becca showed up with my cooler that I had left at camp and it had a brand new helmet in it to replace my Scorpion that got rashed up. Thanks sweetie!!!!! I owe you!

Anyway, just thought I'd check in.:-P Be safe guys.

OMG that is unbelievable. :eek2:

That's great that you are getting better, and it is HOT right now so maybe your not missing to much...

You have great friends.....

$1200 and $14,000?!?!?!?!?!? Wow, we're less than half that. Push the insurance company on the medical necessity of air transport due to proximity to a trauma center. Find out how you were categorized by the flight crew on a trauma scale (get a copy of the report). If it was high enough the insurance company will pay up.

Thanks for the info Kurt!! They are sending me some releases to sign so they can file with insurance and then we'll see just how good United Healthcare is. I'll post up what they say.

Holy Moly... that's a crazy amount for a heli-copter ride. Wow.

Glad that your getting better tho, I would think the bill would put me in the trauma unit tho... jez, that's just nuts.

I remember the guys that showed up said you HAD to go on the ride because the local center wouldn't be able to help. That's nuts if the insurance doesn't pay for it, here's a lot of praying sent your way for that one.

We also tried (very briefly) to talk them out of calling in the chopper on the grounds that it wasn't really needed. They said that it was needed because they could not afford to have their ground transport tied up all day driving over to the hospital and back. I understand this, but it's frustrating that they only had 1 ambulance and that they're ripping you so hard on the air transport bill.

Remember the phrase, "I can't fly, it just makes me go crazy". No one wants to be in that Bell Long Ranger with someone going ape since the feet are right by the pilot and controls. ;-)

I'd be afraid that this would be when the BIG needle came out of the kit... :eek2:

Given the choice of the helicopter ride and its price tag or being left there, I think I would opt for the back seat of another bike. It would suck, but for that kind of money, I can put up with a lot of pain...

This really bothers me. How selfish are people that they can't cut a ride short to help out a fellow rider that has gone down. That's pathetic and shameful IMO. That road isn't going anywhere....you can always hit it again after you've helped a brother out.

Wayne, good on you and the others that were willing to lend a hand.

Bill, heal up, bro and know that some of us here still understand the concept of helping out a fellow rider in need.

In the boating world, most people never hesitate to pitch in when help is needed, because they know that someday, they're going to be the ones who need the help. In short, what goes around comes around.

Here's prayers that you heal naturally, completely, and are back with 100% functioning sooner rather than later.

Chris

Ya don't need a big needle for "Liquid Hammer". All arguments are over at that point, but we might have to remind you to breathe.

The line about remaining available for coverage is a crock. We do it, but only charge the ground rate since that was all that was really required. What about tying up that helicopter for a non-critical injury? Why pass on a transport for an event that is in progress for one that "might" happen. They are "working it" for personal convienence and profit.

All I'm hoping for is that my insurance covers it. As long as that happens I'll just have to count my blessings and learn from it and hope it never happens again.

I will give a tip for anyone else. Please take this opportunity to get Personal Injury Protection on your motorcycle policy. It will help with insurance copays and what not. I had it on the car and truck but didn't have it on the motorcycles. Big mistake on my part. So please learn from my mistakes and get this coverage for yourself. It's dirt cheap and it would be a lifesaver to help out with the medical bills.

Let me second the recommendation for PIP. It is cheap and can come in VERY handy. BTW, if you are offered MEDPAY instead, insist on PIP (Medpay only pays for medical, PIP pays for any expenses proximately caused by the crash). Both PIP and Medpay are "no fault" and pay out regardless of why you crashed.

Also, get Uninsured/Underinsured ("UM/UIM") coverage for your bike (your auto policy probably has a motorcycle exclusion). With the number of uninsured drivers estimated at over 25 percent, and the minimum required by Texas law at $20,000, you NEED this coverage.

:tab I would add that you should get the extra rider that covers accessories. With Progressive, you automatically get $1000 of coverage. This will cover stuff like your helmet, riding gear, gloves, boots, GPS, aftermarket parts, non stock luggage, and so on. $1000 sounds like a lot, but it isn't. When Beth and I had our wreck back in October last year, I had $2000 on my policy at the time and just all of our riding gear pretty much tapped that out. Add an after market exhaust, or some GIVI bags and you are gonna hit that real fast!

I was figuring up my gear the other day and I'm over $1k just in my gear!

I'll be adding PIP and collision on my bikes once I turn 25 and I miraculously become more responsible according to the insurance

Glad you're on the mend, Bill. Yogi gave me an update at bike night tonight - sounds like you're progressing quite nicely. You'll be back on the bike in no time. :rider:

I can back up everything he is saying with my $27,000 shoulder. If I hadn't had the PIP I don't think I could have seen a Dr.

Something about insurance companies refusing to pay, so it causes the Dr.s to refuse to see Auto Accident victims. I had to agree to pay cash just so I could see an orthopedist, and the cash came from the PIP.

Squidward and I didn't have PIP on our bikes either with our accident, we learned a valuable lesson and have put PIP on our trucks, and it will go on our bikes as well, whenever we get new ones.

It's a good thing that I dont ride with gear then, I couldnt afford to ruin it in a crash.
I figure $1k worth of gear is much cheaper then paying for the road rash. Sure insurance will cover that, but speaking from experience, road rash hurts and keeps hurting for a long time.
I still have the scars. I'm told that chic's dig scars, but I guess I haven't found the right chics

But hey, its the USA and we each can choose how we do or don't gear up :rider:
