Roaming the Western USA

Tired of being wet, cold, hungry...
Treated us to lunch, went to Great Basin NP.
Got cold, started to rain, moved to motel.
Now this motel from the outside you would not expect it to look better than BW, HE....
Nice inside.

Let me see what I can do about getting this updated.
Have some pics, not many.

Day 1 (continued)

Pulled into a West Tx rest area.
A couple there were looking at a sign by the entrance and was curious about what all the hullabalow was about:

Nothing really, it's just Texas...

Day 2

Rode to just East of Albaqurce.
Have a long ride in the morning.
If I can leave early enough I can make Las Vegas by noon or just after and have some new tires put on. Then I will take what is left of the day and head north to Ely.
Will stop there and start looking at the tracks that MetalCraver is leaving and see if I can work out some intersect to meet those 5 riders.

Day 3

This was one long day...
Left the motel at ~4:00am.
Was approaching Hoover dam at about 12:00 (noon).

My head was going from side to side looking at all the rock formations and then came up on the canyon. Told myself I have got to stop and take pics or else I am going to have a wreck for not paying attention to the road. But sheesh that canyon was something to look at.

This images were taken from a scenic overlook.

Got passed the dam and headed to Las Vegas.
Arrived at the mc shop and my tires had arrived.

They were wheeling my bike in the shop within 10 mins of arrival.
For travelers this is the way they are done.
Seems other jobs are pushed aside long enough to mount/balance new tires or maybe just a slow day for the mc guy. They had told me this is the way they do it for travelers.

ATV Cycle Sports
4440 E Craig
Las Vegas, NV.

Steering has been given me trouble and they took a look at it.
Said the races were more than likely cupped due to improper adjustment.
Turning left/right there is a position on either side that it jerks past.
No smooth transition on those two positions.
They did not have stem bearings and would take 5 days for turn around.
I will wait and get it fixed when back home....
Erik M, you listening? :)

Was out of the shop somewhere around 2:00pm and headed to Ely for the night.

During this time I have been texting with a rider from advrider and he has been keeping me informed of where the other riders are at. They are still in Utah, headed for City of Rocks to camp.

I am thinking that I can leave Ely in the morn and head up 93 to meet them somewhere in NV.... Stopped for night about 20+ miles from Ely. Had put in a lot of miles and hours riding, just couldn't do that last bit to Ely.

Note: there is a lot to day 4. I am going to hold off as I have to pack back up as we are leaving at dawn tomorrow to continue south. Wish I could figure out a way to download the text msgs I was having with VegaStele about where the other riders are during this time. That makes for some interesting reading.

I so miss traveling though the remoteness of the West. Once you leave the cities, you more or less have the roads less traveled to yourself.

Remote it was!

Arrived back home at 4:30am this morning.
Should have saved gas receipts from yesterday for Iron Butt.

Was just no way to keep a live report going because of the remoteness.
No cell service for most of the time.
At the end of the day too wore out to do anything.

Give me a bit and i will post up.

As soon as i get over being ticked off about my missing camera, I will post what pics i had already downloaded, plus see what is on the cell that i can use here.

Day 3 (continued)

These videos are on the approach to Hoover Dam.

Day 4
With the help of vegastele msging me about the other riders postioning, current at City of Rocks, I headed up 93, then onto alt93 to meet them in Wendover, NV whick was a fuel stopped marked on the tracks.

Arrived in Wendover and it appeared that i was running ahead of the rider group.
They were still meandering around up at City. I headed to the end of the leg they would take from there to Montello. Bad storm on the Pilot Road dirt route off of 80 going north, so passed it up to take hwy 233 up to Montello.

Rode about 2 miles up 233 when i received a msg that i thought stated they were already on Pilot Road, so back down to the end of Pilot Road at I80. Ran into bad storm as I was approaching Pilot Road intersection with I80 so just hid under a bridge to wait for the storm to blow over. Waiting out the storm for some minutes, next msg stated they were just now heading to Montello, so with a light rain I took off again to Montello.

Arriving at Montello received msg that they had turned away from the route that had the storm, Pilot Road, and were headed to Wells. Seems they had started to Montello and seen the storm clouds and head to Wells. Turned around, headed back down 233 to pickup 80 and then onto Wellsm where i found them at the gas waypoint.
They had only been there about 10 min before i showed up. After a lot of howdies and such, we head out to Angel Creek Campground where we were to spend that night.

Angel Creek Campground was a pretty place, green grass, lots of trees and a view of the snow capped Greys Peak and Chimney Rock seemingly to be right next to our camp it was a great view.

Cloudy, dreary looking that evening, but awoke to sunshine and clear skies the next morning.

Day 5
Woke up to a clear sky and sunny day.
Well of course its sunny if its a clear sky day.

The mountains now looked like this when i finally crawled, rolled out of the tent.
P6070124.JPG

Rolling out of the campsite and back to Wells to pickup 93 South to allow us to take 229 to 767 CR, which is a dirt road that lead us to 788 CR wich was also a dirt road. Both of these roads were through an Indian Reservation.

Pit stop before CR 229.
P6070125.JPG

There they are, the mountains coming into view.
P6070126.JPG

Now this is better, getting closer. CR 229 towards 767 CR.
We will be following the base line of the mountains as we go south.

On this first image which is the start south on it for us, the first curve is 11 miles down there.

Caught this pic of some wild horses along the way down Long Valley.

Thanks Bob.
I have a few more pics from cell phone.
Camera fell out of top bag going down I20, only thing i can think of.
All pics from after Baker were lost.

Have to get another camera and going to a gopro with chest mount.
Saw a vid where the camera had been raised about 2 inches.
Looked good the vid did, almost like it was you on the bike.

I will get the rest of pics uploaded when i can.

Day 6
Timber Creek Campground to Great Basin National Park

After our group of riders got seperated into two groups, with the first trying to catch up with the second group that was behind them..... Yea, i said that right.

One point i want to make is the second group went to take pics.
At this time when ready to move out again i did see Metalcarver make U turn and head back the other way. I continue on for about 100 feet down the hill and the road just petered out into a double track instead of county gravel.

I looked at the tracks and it sure did appear that big bikes had continued on.
So off I went. That double soon turned into a single track and then just totally disappeared. Here i was stuck with mountain one side and a big ravine on the other side.
Managed to get the bike turned around and headed back out. Right side skid plate collided with a good size rock putting one big folded back area on it. Did manage to keep bike upright and continue on out.

Went back to top of the hill to think of where they could have gone.
Decided to just wait, someone would miss me and come back.
Sure enough Metalcarver soon appears and we take off in the right direction.

here is the wrong way to go.....

Finally arriving at Baker and able to get something to eat before heading into the Great Basin National Park to camp.

This on is for you KP, what's for dinner....
Some type of bean/beef burito stuffed with all types of stuff, including Spanish rice.
Good it was too.

Since i am missing pictures due to lost PnS, i am going to just end it with a few comments of the return home.

Went through Joshua National Forest

Thusday June 11, 2015
Had made it to Van Horn where i spent the night.
Received a text msg asking me to swing down to Valentine, Tx, and go to the post office there and get some envelopes post marked from there, which i did.
20150612_104629.jpg

Chatted with postal clerk there and she said to come back in Feb when they have a special stamp to cancel the post mark, guess that makes it more valuable in some way.

Valentine is a town that barely exists.
She said used to have a population of around 2,000, but with train round table shutting down there no work left there except for the ranches.

Leaving there i headed to Fort Davis and then onto Davis Mountains State Park to get a pic of the bike in front of the state park sign. Which i did.

After leaving the State Park, i came across Balmorhea State Park and was going to take a pic of bike in front of that sign. It was just too crowded with cars trying to get in and the line was not moving, so i moved on.

Finally arriving at Pecos, i had to wait about two hours there for the leading sand storm, followed by a rain storm with heavy winds, along with a tornado warning to clear before pushing onto I20 East.

I did finally make it home, but the next morning (Sat) at 5:30am.
From Van Horn -> Valentine -> Fort Davis -> Pecos -> Home...
Left Van Horn - Fri 9:30am, arrived Tyler - Sat 5:30am ~716 miles.

One tired puppy when i finally switched the engine off after pulling into the yard.

Wish i had not of lost the camera, lot of pics on it that would have added to the final days of the ride. At least now i can consider this one closed and start planning for my next trip.

My thoughts on trying to do a live ride report is that it is a pain, but if i can ever get down to really being able to do it, without losing my camera, I will keep it up and try to improve.

Live report while on the road, or done after coming back - either way is appreciated.

Thanks for taking the time.

What a trip! Like Bob, you have lit the fire for me to take a long one again..... And ANY report is good regardless of how it's done. After all, it's YOUR trip!
