Baja's Roaming Texas

<snip>
We'd brought steaks for dinner but by that time the wind had picked up and it felt like the whole trip was going to be a bust. So the owner opened one of his storage shed units and we rolled in a Firepit to cook our food.

About midnight the wind was howling like a banshee across that tin siding and it was pitch black five feet outside the open doors. We were sitting inside the storage unit smoking cigars and drinking some good German beer. An old man with a small white dog came walking in out of the storm. The dog had stars painted on it, in multiple colors.

He had the dogs lead wrapped around his wrist and as I sat there I kept thinking there was something wrong. Then I saw it, he had a plastic hand. I asked him about it. He said he was from California and was a sheep farmer. He'd gotten in a shoot out in the 60's and before he killed the thief, the guy had shot his hand off.

Then he just wandered off into the storm dragging the little white dog with pink and blue painted stars.

Are you sure it was cigars you were smoking?
Real or not, it is a good story that had me  You told it well!

Awe, Baha, Don't go home!

:rider:

Good morning Spirit,

I'll tell you one thing, I take back anything good I said about the manager of the Comstock Motel there. It seems if you stay there for a couple of nights and then you come back, it gives her the right to think you are a reg and talk to you anyway she wants. I will never go back there.

Started to check in and I left, drove to Ozana to get room for night.
Best Western is too expensive for what you get for free hot breakfast.
cheap cheerios that taste terrible, instant eggs that are worse than ones on boy scout trips, tv that does not work, wifi that you can not log into..

the other day when I left Comstock on the way to big bend, I stopped at Judge Roy Bean's place, took a couple of pics, then also stopped by the graves of the last two train robbers in Tx.

will post those pics sometime or other.
right now just thinking about where to go.
was going to stay in Comstock and work my way back to KP place for the weekend Mng.

Baja, you went this far, go on to big bend. You will love it this time of year.

I did, sorta, turned down the next to the last leg and it 48 miles to the next turn.... Read that and it was like all the 'fun' just up and left.
So many bikes, did not think there would be room at the bunk house.
Just turned back and headed north.

got to some state park near McDonald's Observatory, pulled in there, nice looking place there.. But just did not feel like camping any more.

Anyway I'm in Ozona trying to decide where to go.
heavy rain storms called for up neat tyler, unsure about lampasas.

For 135.00 at this Best Western, I sure expected better from it.

Would like to make it to KP's for this weekend.
Think that meet up is this weekend.

"Bunk house". Sounds like you were heading to Big Bend Ranch State Park. The state park is fun, but the trails there are pretty gnarly.

The national park is not that far and more civilized or Terlingua is always fun. But it sounds like you have had all the fun you can stand for right now. Perhaps another time.

Yes, I was headed to the SP. Not so much to ride, but to explore the hiking trails and take pics of flowers, rock formations, etc.

Well, i am back home. Friends were telling me not to head that way because of storms.
got home at about 10:00pm, nary a drop of rain, except for wet roads and fog.

The erie dark red lightning in the clouds were to the north and south of me,
Seemed to be rain/lightning free path all the way home from Waco. Hardly any traffic, which was a relief.

It was nice to be missed and welcomed home by my dog.

I had a list in my head of things i had learned of what to do and what not to do.
But like always I can't remember the list.

1) Never again will i go to Comstock, Tx.
the place reminded me of those towns on the SciFi channel movie where the whole town was in on keeping a dark and sinister secert.

2) With all my preaching about stop and smell the roses, i didn't practice what i preached.
It seemed like i would set a distination and then it was either get there or else. I think a lot of that had to do with pulling the trailer. Quite a few places that i passed where i would have just wheeled the bike off the road to take pics, but not with the trailer attached.

The trailer will be fine for what i had intended it for, which was short day trips to go fishing. If I was going to fish way far off, then that would be the plan, no side trips. just to whatever fishing hole and that's it.

3) If your going to play cat n mouse with the rain, put your rain gear on before the first drop hits you. You will lose at that game.

4) Don't post any more RR, I an't no writer, nor story teller, nor photographer.
I had dreams of writing a good report with pics and all, but it just an't me.

5) This RR sucks, it can be deleted at anytime, don't care.

6) If it is still here by the time i get the photos of what i have xferred, i'll post them.
Some parts of the ride/pics I consider ok. Should have done route of the history of Tx.
I find that very interesting.

One more note about pictures, the thought came to mind as to why post pics, there are so many on TWT that to me it seems a repeat of all before.

edit:
I started out with a dunlop d606 with about 500 miles on it on the rear and a kenda k270 on the front with about 2k miles.
The d606 is wore out (to me), I expected to get a lot more milage out of it than i did. Probably all together is has 3k on it.
Pavement and trailer is all i can blame it on. K270 on the front has lasted a long time.
Just guessing i road 2k+ miles.

If i were to ride straight to Big Bend, it is 700 miles, add in all the all directions i rode to before and after that is easly 2k.

Because its your trip and your pictures. No one is going to delete this thread (well unless you start using profanity, posting porno pictures, etc. :-) )

When I do a trip report, I write it for me. I'm the only audience that I care about. If someone else enjoys my report, all the better, but I am the intended audience.

Because I am the intended audience, I use my reports to document my memories so that at some point in the future I can re-read the report and recall the fond (and sometimes not so fond) memories of my trip. They are my memories and if I stop making memories - I die.

Bajaexplorer,
I'm same as you, don't write very good, am worse with a camera. But, don't let that stop you from posting your RR. It's not easy to ride and write/post and you may think no one cares about your postings, but there are many lurkers like myself who look forward to any/all posts from riders like yourself and it gets us through the day!
:rider:

Ride reports are easy when you're reading them.

They're a pain when you're writing them. That's why I've only done one.

Baja, don't quit on the report. Bob is right just capture your ride and memories. I struggle also to do it but I have plans to continue to try.

I would say if you got 3k out of a 606 that is not bad for that tire.

Y'all are right. But i sure enjoy a well written RR.

I have to now get ready to run the TAT.
One rider wants to leave first week of May and take kevin's route south to Ca. and then on down to Panama. If i get that far south, I an't turning around cause South America beckens. But then there is my dog. If y'all have ever picked up a stray dog, you will understand that it is like they know you saved them from something, but they don't know what... Someone abanded them the first time, I will not let that happen a second.

If i can find someone leaving about 1st/2nd week of June to Or. then i would jump on that trip.

Will see how my RR goes for it.
I'll will write it as if I am going to read it many years down the road, both the good time and bad (did i just jinx it)....

New tires, tent, pad, lighter cookware.
Don't see how to cut down on weight of tools, except to go with titanium.
They are a tad more than i want to spend.
Freaking tubes are heavy.

Anyway, i need to get the rest of pics uploaded and also see if any of the vids i made are worth posting.

Texas History.
Should have spent more time going to places like these.
Maybe will do a trip based on places that i can get to that really have something to photograph instead of just a marker of what was.

I am sure those of you that read westerns have read about the famous Judge Roy Bean.
Never thought that i would get to see the place. Was going down 90 and there is was.

As it turns out, the saloon was the court house

The opera house.
I don't know if Lilly Langtree ever came here.
Judge Bean was always writting to her, whether she answered the letters or not,
I don't remember.

Fort McKavett
Seems like this frontier fort was made up of an all black regiment

The hospital was the biggest building at the fort

If they were cured/fixed they went to the mortuary.
Back then it was just called Dead House, for real.

Well, i guess if you were use to using a sink, not to wash your hands but

Instructions on how the process of elimination worked

All the bricks/stones for building the fort came from this quarry.
This is one of the many quarries used.

The kiln, for making quicklime for use an ingredient in the cement used to motor the bricks.

other pics did not turn out good, out of focus on an auto focus camera.
will post vids if i find any worth posting.

What brands did you get gear wise?

Tent; REI Passage I

Sleeping bag and pad are about 18 yo.
bag; wiggy's desert bag.
pad; thermorest blue/brown one.

tent is a one person, it's ok, but still don't like it. Not enough room to suit me.
bag and pad i'll trash.

bag just too slippery, doesn't stay in place and hard to roll up. its like the inside insulation is loose.

pad just doesn't self inflate like it use to. was ok way back when.

Writing a ride report while trying to ride is way too much for me. It really detracts from the trip. I've decided to always wait and do it later. From time to time I will start one with the intent of posting a few phone pics along the way with an update or two but save the meat of the report for when I'm done. Write a report to save the memories. I still go back and look at my stuff from years ago to relive the rides.

You're doing fine with yours ;-)

Yes, it is way too much for me also.
Thank you for saying it is fine.
I just really don't have very much interesting content in mine.

Baja, i knew you had it in you. Well done sir.

Now you need to go to Baja and, well... explore.
Jus saying.

Thank you.
I will get there sometime or other, just don't know when.

Good ride report so far, I've enjoyed it!

Well, thank you DFW Tom.
If I do manage to ride the TAT this year, I will write a RR.
Just not going to be able to match the 99.99% of the RR in quality.
But I'll give it go.

Maybe I'll stick to Tx and follow OldSlowGuy's loop and/or the Texas Loop.
With me there is no telling, or forecasting for what i will do.
