Well, my brother is a restaurant manager and has insurance that has covered a lot of it. From what I understand, they are also getting SSI/Medicare benefits for her and other than getting up to the maximum out-of-pocket each year ($5k?) it's all been taken care of.

There's no rich Aunt Becca, though. If there was she'd have been up there to visit more often. :doh:

Considering the hospital time & expenses - that is not much.

I've talked to them about checking out the medical resources here in the Houston area, but apparently they've already talked with the specialists about where the best treatment is for her condition(s) and it's between NY and Philly, so they'll just stay put in NY and be near family while getting top-notch treatment.

This past weekend we reached a huge milestone - Emma turned 2!
What is normally a "typical" childhood celebration is much more than that for us since we never knew if she would see this day. Kat and Heath threw her a party in true Tinkerbell style!

Thank you all for your prayers and support through these last 24 months.

You gotta admire Kat and Heath for the tough 2 years with their young 'un.

Hi Everyone! It's been 3 months today that Emma came home from her hospital stay. I've realized that I haven't sent out an Emma update in quite some time so here is the update: SHE'S DOING AWESOME!

She's nothing but smiles. Emma was measured 3 weeks ago at 33.5 inches long and weighing 25lbs. She is becoming more aware of her surroundings and has managed to get all the nurses wrapped around her little finger.

Emma is definitely getting stronger and her stamina is also increasing thanks to, first of all, the trach, that is able to give her the necessary oxygen that her body was lacking in the past. Also, to the work of the wonderful therapists and the Early Intervention program that NYS has in Suffolk County (this is where some of your tax money is going to, by the way.) Emma is tolerating her equipment more (like her Squiggles Stander and her Special Tomato Chair) and because of the equipment she has also increased the tolerance of the standing and sitting positions. She has yet to lift her head and sit, but at the rate that she is going we have complete faith that she will conquer this milestone. Now we are just waiting on some orthotics and a stroller that will hold all of Emma's equipment (vent, oxygen tank, battery, etc...) so we can go for walks outside and make it easier to commute with her.

Emma has captured the hearts of all 4 nurses that we currently have; as I mentioned above, she has them wrapped around her little finger. She simply rules, ha ha. Her nurses are really nice and knowledgeable and we feel comfortable with them. As a matter of fact, last Friday Heath and I went to look at some houses on our own for a couple of hours and not worry about Emma being home with the nurse.

I can comfortably say that we have finally settled and have gotten used to a routine. It took a while but we have successfully achieved it! Of course, not all days are smooth, but for the most part everything is our version of "normal".

Thank you all who have us and Emma in your prayers and thoughts. We are very lucky to have such wonderful family and friends like you!

What a very beautiful baby!! My assistant delivered a 13 oz, yes - I said 13 oz baby - who will be two years on on 4/30! She had a tough time but God has always been on her side! I pray blessings and love to your family!!
 
Another update - Emma's special stroller has finally arrived and been set up for her and all her equipment. Now Kat and Heath can take her out and be a lot more mobile without worrying about how to get everything around with them.
