New Mexico, Again!

It’s crazy that we are in this fairly remote area and have decent cell coverage. So…

The views from our campsite are incredible. The pix that John posted were taken from right at our site. What looks like a citadel on a hill is Angel Peak.

The adventure truly begins tomorrow as we explore this area on 2 wheels. John is working his gps magic now as I make this entry.

We've stopped for a late lunch/early dinner in the tiny town of Cuba.

El Bruno's. (Appears Chaco Grill has closed down.)

That is sad, we have stopped by there several times. The owner was a real character.

OP, during not so hot weather, that Angel Peak BLM area is my favorite place to camp on my way to CO or UT. Plus you can ride down in those low areas below the escarpment. It's funny how none of the cool terrain is visible whatsoever from the pavement only a mile or so from the highway. Lots of oil and gas stuff going on in there, but it's still peaceful to camp there.

It's crazy the places I've found cell coverage this season. Totally unexpected...but greatly appreciated. Now, go get to the exploring stuff.

Omg, I am whupped! Too tired to post pix even.

On our way out of the campground this morning, we met up with Luka, a young man from Germany who is exploring the world by moto. He joined us.

We had an awesome day exploring an area called Valley of Dreams. About 60 miles dirt\gravel roads then hiked 4 miles of rough terrain exploring hoodoos and other incredible formations.

That's it. I'm pooped

:coffee: We can wait on the pics...just not long.

That's pretty interesting on that Valley of Dreams. Looking at pics on the internet, those are some amazing formations. All the years traveling by this area, I'd never heard of it. Will check out.

He owns an oil rig supply company in Louisiana. The build is immaculate and you (with your background) would drool over the wiring layout but I don't have a photo of that. The screen in the top center is a FLIR.

Tim Masterson (Hard TX Rider) was the first person I know to use FLIR on a bike but when I saw him at Pink's last year he was no longer running it and I forgot to ask about it. If I see him this November I'll try to remember to ask. He demonstrates it in some of his videos... https://www.youtube.com/user/hardtxrider/videos

Why does John have so many caps in the truck?

Because driving directly into a westering sun calls for imaginative solutions.
He's a man who wears many hats, for his many talents!! :hail:

I only drove through Cuba on the way home from Chaco Culture. It's pretty out there.

The way in and out of Chaco is via dirt roads, somewhat washboardy. The canyon is really cool though, tent camped there one night.

Haven't been where you're at. Looks magnificent. Thanks for the pics (because it didn't happen otherwise).

That morning we left the truck at the campsite and rode out, headed for Valley of Dreams. As we left the camping area, we met up with Luka, a young man from Germany, exploring the world on an 1150 GS. On the spur of the moment he joined us for the day.

Although it may have been more than he bargained for-some sections of deep sand had him duck walking the big boxer- but he is young and strong and kept the beast upright and swore it was all worth it in the end.

Alright, here:
Did I mention it is remote?

John and Luka take a break in the only shade to be found for miles. If you come here, sunscreen, a sun hat and more water than you think you'll need are necessary.

The formations draw you in, the longer you walk, the more fantastical they become.

Finally! This incredible structure. Definitely the highlight and well worth the hike.

Finally, we tore ourselves away and began the walk back to the bikes. It seemed so much longer going back. We were all physically and mentally drained. It is no wonder this area was\is sacred to Native Americans. Truly unique and special place.

What a welcome sight!

"All Creatures Great and Small..."

Saw this bug at Angel Peak camp. Never seen one before. Check the ridiculously small head and the useless tiny "wings", lol.

Looked it up, Black and Red Blister beetle. Can secrete a caustic substance that causes painful blisters. I didn't need to look it up to know not to try and handle anything with that kind of coloration.

Today spotted this guy. John didn't see him and almost ran over him. He never budged even as I walked up til I got about 3' away, then calmly slithered away. Very pretty markings. Type of bull snake.

IMG_20220920_115430002.jpg

No pic, but an adult horny toad sprinted across a sandy track in front of John. Every time we come to NM, we see at least one Horned Lizard. Too bad they've become rare in TX.

What great formations. I love that type of topography. Seeing the snake and even the bug always makes me think in amazement about life in the desert and how it is sustained.

Keep it coming. :coffee: I’ve got plenty of coffee.
