The "Non-Invasive" Dirt Roads Around Austin Thread

Cool, I may have to have a Wee, Look's like a good bike for two up with a little DSing thrown in, I'll be keeping the KLR, but I was riding with Don on his flat black Wee and I was surprised at how it will flat run a hole in the wind on the highway, I like em!

Yeah, I'm in the same boat - have a KLR and want a wee-Strom in addition to it for mainly pavement rides. Been tough finding a bargain on a Wee-Strom though. Many for sale, just no great deals. I can wait - patience is a virtue when shopping...

i picked up my Wee after having a 2009 KLR for several months and having nothing but problems with it. i wanted to love it but was unable to get it sorted, the dealership was unable to resolve it as well.

they gave me more than it was worth in a trade for the Wee. I couldnt be happier, it goes everywhere i took the KLR (dirt roads around llano, junction, bastrop etc), and is so much better on the road. my wife enjoys being a passenger (once i got an alaska leather sheepskin), she has had such a good time riding with me that she now wants to get a license and get her own bike.

Knockin on 70K.....

Been a good 'un so far.....

The dry slab is on Lampasas CR2200/Mills CR339 north of FM581 east of Lometa.

The washed out crossing pics were actually taken during this last week near Agman's ranch on Lampasas CR2901 close to CR2965 SW of Evant.

One of those shots looks crazy muddy. :eek2:

Yeah...Only a crazy person would've tried that crossing..........& it looked like several had in their pick ups!

All the crossings around the area still have a good bit of water flowing. We crossed several in the Lampasas area on Sunday. These weren't deep so the bikes didn't have any problems, but there are many like the washed out Lampasas river crossing on Lampasas CR2901 that should be taken very seriously.

Snuck out in the cold today and headed to Gonzales via gravel and Mad Max-ish 1.5 lane tarmac. Saw some interesting country... from the very, uh, rural in the most garbage everywhere sense of the word to the wierd ghost infested giant empty polio rehab facility sense of the word. I should be able to fill in some of the blanks on the map in that direction once I get the kid to bed. Although if this second beer takes effect, I may join him...

Are you able to get to it and look around inside? What a miracle that they were able to create a vacine for our generation, Prior to that, What they were experimenting with and trying to do was barbaric, Yeah, There will be some ghost in that place.

I asked the ranger and she indicated that was a negative. Apparently the warm springs dried up or maybe are no longer warm, but I think the facility was open into the 1970s (she had worked there).

Still a sight to see from a far, Interesting history, We happened upon part of what I think used be the old road from Elgin to Taylor, It start's directly across 95 from the gas station in Coupland to the west, There's a sign that say's No outlet, It wind's down into the tree's and end's at a very old wood bridge which I rode across, My bud Don said the the whole thing was shaking as I came back across, He was standing on it, It has some big hole's in it and what's left of old black top on it, It's no big deal but kinda cool.

Here are some pics from Sunday's ride. Perfect conditions for going fast... we kept the speeds down though.

Some questions:

What tires are you running on your KLR?

Are these roads on the map? they look great, packed enough to keep the dust down and in the woods.

Just had to take a pic or two with all this white stuff all over the place....

Only bike in the lot this afternoon. And yes, I'm glad it didn't keep going like it was over lunch...

Actually did think about takin the bike out......but the real downer to the idea was all the fairing pieces that I had to get boxed for shipment after selling them Sunday night. Chasin down large boxes in a cage till lunch with a friend at 1 ....then it was 2:30PM ...took a break .......Just finished up 9:30PM

I have ridden in the snow in northern NM before. All the red rock...the adobe buildings.......& that white snow!!! flippin great! The locals at the reservation trading post looked at me kinda funny while I was puttin on my rain gear due to the huge wet flakes. It snowed most of the day then too. Stopped at a restaurant in Cuba to warm up & got the same ARE YOU CRAZY looks as before at the tradin post + random snow/riding questons from the waitresses.

The Tire's are Dunlop D606 front and rear, re.the roads, We went out 290 EAST from Elgin to Old Potato rd, close to Paige,TX, There is a good sign for it, turn right on old potato{it's dirt} and take it all the way to Gotier Trace rd, It Ts into G.trace and GT is not marked, Turn right and take it all the way to Bastrop state park, park road 1, We took a right on park rd 1 to Alum creek road and then left to hwy 71, As for on the map, It is but not marked all that well, Go back to the first page of this Thread and scroll down to the roads east of Austin, The steel frame bridge is just east of old downtown coupland off hwy 95 between elgin and taylor, cross rail road tracks to the east and take the first left to the bridge about a mile down. SZ.

Eight or ten points added between Bastrop and Gonzales from my solo ride last Monday, cold but fun fun.

Who was riding Sunday afternoon in the Driftwood area. I saw what looked to be a honda with a large ADV sticker on the front fender turning from FM 150 to FM1826, maybe heading to the Salt Lick BBQ.

Oops. Looks like I forgot about checking this post. Coolhand, I have a long dirt rd next to my house, and I just go. I string together as many dirt rds as I can find in a general direction, if I see something new, I go for it. Road numbers and names...? Pettytown Rd is good, there are a lot of dirt rds between Lockhart, Dale, High Grove, Shiloh, ...
Sand Hills Rd behind Red Rock is fun- but all forks dead end. The terrain is neat.
Sorry, they are mostly in my punkin' head.
Guadalupe and Gonzales counties have a lot of dirt rds too. There is a one lane wood/metal bridge over the San Marcos River down there.
With Toll 130 coming, things are are going to change, and not better for dirt rds. Caldwell co rd 218 has the only gravel stream crossing I have seen around here that is wet all the time. Even in this last drought. Short rd, but its close to my place, and baptizing my tires makes me smile. As long as that !bull! stays behind the fence.
I'm trying to get a friend of mine to do a day trip out here with me soon- company would be welcome.
