So, I got the W650 running yesterday, and rode her about 2 miles (it was cold). She will pull past redline in all the gears now and I didn't get any oil on my foot either! I started off going up a size with the Main jets and the Pilot jets. Then I pulled the starter to get rid of the gunk and oil underneath it. Put her together, started right up, then the clip that holds the bevel drive in place popped out and she stopped. I had to call Jimmy the Scab and he came over and gave me the 3rd and 4th hands to finish it up. Took her for a spin and I am very happy.
Put in one size up on the mains from 118 to 120 and also the pilots up from 35 to 38 seems to work ok. We will see when I get a chance to ride a bit. Also, every gasket, o-ring, diaphragm and hose on the carbs is new. The jets, float needle, mixture screw were also replaced. These things work pretty well. Very happy so far.
Then I wanted to get the goo under the starter and popped it out. As you can see it also had a good bit of the old oil leak in there as well. Additionally, I found a blockoff for the mixture screws under there and initially thought someone had dropped a valve shim. But, I was wrong.
Pretty gnarly under there.
And she runs, idles nicely at 600-ish RPM and pulls strong off of the bottom. Runs really well when the cam spins. I took the picture on the lift while adjusting the idle down, couldn't see the tach, so I took a picture, sue me. As Mitch would have said, "First World problems"
Then Diana called and said, "Hey we need some waste oil for a science project for Carmen." I had lots, so I said come on. I pressurized my 20 gal oil storage and then neglected to tell Brad how fast I thought the gallon was filling. Apparently, he needed to learn the lesson I learned the first time I did it. It was pretty funny. Luckily, they had bought a bale of sawdust, so we got to try a practical experiment in soaking up oil. Worked a treat as they say.
This was about a quart of good old used motorcycle and car oil.
So, we began the sawdust experiment. Seems successful, I forgot I was wearing my jaunty hat.
Of course, Diana wanted to try her hand at cleaning oil with sawdust, not really, but she did participate. With her and Brad cleaning it was about a 15-20 minute cleanup and the lift was dirty anyway.
Then we needed just a little more and Brad and I decided that pouring it outside over the Johnson grass would be better if we had a second incident. We were right, but didn't spill.
Then I played a little football with the grandkids, then my wonderful wife Donna cooked us a pork loin and made 2 days worth of lunches for me. She is the best. I am about to get ready to go to work for the first time in 5 yrs. Amazingly, I am pretty excited about it, but I am sure it will become just like work again pretty quickly. But, I do enjoy teaching folks so that will be fun. Also, I love to buy motorcycles and stuff, so that will make it even more fun. LOL. Be safe, wear gear, do wheelies.
